I have the Retrax MX bed cover that has the rails on the side. Then I have some Rhino Rack Cross Bars. I plan to get a basket to put on the cross bars to hold stuff for camping and then I can keep the bed as storage as well. 2 years ago I built an offroad camper. We started tent camping and I decided I wanted to do this in case of inclement weather and so we could explore while camping. I was always uneasy leaving the campsite with only a tent and not being able to lock up any camping gear.

You built this camping trailer? It's super nice. Is there one like this that you could buy directly?

Yes, I will throw a few build pics up. The closest to it that is somewhat affordable is the Hiker trailer. Financially building it was much cheaper for all the things I have in it. I have hot water heater that is plumbed into a shower and the sink, 12v fridge/freezer, and it is tall enough to sleep me (6'5"). The hiker trailers seem like good options and they are fairly bare bones so you can finish them out how you would like.

I showed the first 3 pics to my wife, and she said "Pefect!"....and neither of us our campers. We are old, and if we are going to get into it, it won't be with a tent on the ground. And since I have zero skills in the making my own department, I will have to check out Hiker ones.

I think you need to create a FULL tour video and post on YouTube if you haven't already.

We help people sell their cars.
Not the cheapest solution, but definitely the most convenient for me after years of overlanding/camping with different setups.
-RCI Bed Bars
-Roofnest Meadowlark
I can change from my daily driver setup of a soft roll up tonneau cover to this in about 20 mins. No drilling required. Tent in it’s stored position is roof height so no real extra aerodynamic drag.

This a great set-up. Is it comfortable sleeping in there? Seems like it's gotta be better than sleeping on the ground.

Pretty firm “mattress” but I’m getting used to it. Wayyyy better than the ground. Also miles better than a foam pad AND a 2 inch inflatable camping pad in the bed of the truck

Super cheap and mobile. First started with a simple air
mattress and boxes for supplies. (first pics) Then went with Drawers and a tri-fold memory foam queen sized mattress (3rd and 4th pic, sitll in the protective bag) Have done 3, 10+ day trips with the memory foam/draw setup and love it. Its just me and the wife who hike remote back country. The tent is a simple attachment/bed extension and takes 5 minutes to set up. The memory foam mattress deploys easily once out of the protective bag. Also have a connecting 10' rain fly/canopy for the rear end.

Sounds decent! Firm might be better for those like me with back problems. Plus, I'm sure you could add toppers if need be.

I don't suppose you kept a set of blueprints handy or your bill of materials? 😁
Then that makes me wonder if I could extend the design a bit for a side-ramp motorcycle carry? I do have my new MIG welder ...

I have a Tuff Stuff Alpha mounted on a Deezee hex rails setup with a Tuff Stuff compact 270 awning. I use these in conjunction with a Truxedo Deuce hybrid tonneau which I absolutely could not live without considering my truck is a regular cab. I constantly use the front opening part of the cover. No shaking or road noise with the tent this low...just the expected fuel economy hit.

Grabbed a bed tent for the little ones for beach camping. I'll be sleeping in the teardrop.
They tested it out a few days ago in the yard.
Once I figured it out, I should now be able to pop it up in short time.

Yes sir.
I altered the steel trailer/frame and extended it several feet. Although it provides a nice deck for storing items off the ground, I did it to both lower the tailgate attached and to make it tow like a dream.
It could never be a load to tow for almost any vehicle, but it towed like a very short trailer and was a bear to back up. You couldn't really see it. 🤣

Now it both bounces less on bumps and you can get out of tough spots like a breeze.

A few years back when I was a younger stronger fella and could get that 600lb beast in/out of a shortbed. But you can see that I can't drop the tailgate if attached:

Then could leave it down even while towing!
