I was not initially all that interested in the work surface, but I'm coming around. Does anyone know:

1.) Can the shift be lowered and the work surface deployed while in motion? We travel a bit and will be pull a camper trailer and toy trailer from time to time. It would make trips a lot better.

2.) Are you losing any storage space in the console or padding in the console armrest?

What are y'all thoughts and concerns about it?

I heard somewhere, and apologies for forgetting the source, that the work surface is not usable while in motion. The shifter must be in the upright position while in drive.

Yes, for sure. Only accessible while parked with shifter collapsed.

I had the exact same 2 questions. I assumed the shifter couldn't be lowered while driving, but would have loved the work surface if it could have been. Long drives with family, could have used it for setting food, or even spot for a small dog to sit (ya ya I know!).

But since it can't be used by driving, if it took up storage space, made the armrest less comfortable, or caused any other issues it might just be an annoyance.

Without the work surface, would be nice if the shifter didn't fold down. Kinda of unnecessary, and just something to break. Plus another nook to collect dust etc.

Deep down, I knew it didn't lower during driving. There are just too many safety concerns regarding that. I agree that the shifter should not drop if the option isn't ticked, but based on the small upcharge Ford is charging for the work surface, I would say they all drop regardless. So, there has to be a drawback to having it, or it would be standard.

I talked the Ford rep this morning and asked him the same question. Absolutely no.

Do you either get the work surface with the lowering shifter or a column shifter?

I have an 18 XLT with floor shifter but haven't seen any pics yet of the 21 with a floor shifter that doesn't fold down.
