So just picking up my 3.5 EcoBoost this week. I have a ~500 mile trip planned this coming weekend, and the weekend after that as well. What is the current recommendations on break-in period for a new engine? In my mind, highway miles are easier on the engine than city driving, so perhaps this is an okay distance, but am interested to hear others' opinions....

I drove 1000 miles in my first two days driving back from the dealer. Based on the feedback here, I varied the speed as well as revs for the entire 1000 miles. I also did not use the Cruise Control. Since then my foot has felt a lot heavier!

Every new engine I’ve had, heavy load and vary speed and RPM.

work it good and seat the rings, won’t give you fits.

change the oil initially at about 1000 miles for the break in and go from there to normal intervals.

and for every response you get, someone will tell you differently.

YOUR GLOVE BOX LIGHT IS ON
WENT OVER 100MPH AT A FEW POINTS ON MY 3 HOUR DRIVE BACK HOME FROM DEALER ON DAY ONE. THEN VARIED SPEED THE REST OF THE WAY. OIL CHANGE AT A 1000. 18K NO AND NO ISSUES YET.

The torque in high gear will encourage you to leave it in 10th as you climb hills, and it will avoid downshifting. I would lock out 9th and 10th gear as you start ascending hills so you run a little more rpm rather than lug the engine.

Whats recommended is varying speeds and rpms without driving too fast (I tried not to exceed 70 ish mph) for the first 1000 miles, also no towing. Usually city driving is recommended because you get to stop and accelerate through all the gears and rpms constantly but you can do it on the highway too just don’t use cruise control, vary your driving speeds, and occasionally get off the highway and hop back on so you can accelerate from a completely stop. You should be fine.

Good thoughts...consensus seems to be to try and vary the RPM and speed by working through all of the gears. I don't plan to tow initially anyway and likely won't get over 75mph regardless. Yes, the 1000 mile oil change for sure.

You can download the Ford manual for the truck in a couple of minutes:

"Your vehicle requires a break-in period. For
the first 1,000 mi (1,600 km), avoid driving
at high speeds, heavy braking, aggressive
shifting or using your vehicle to tow. During
this time, your vehicle may exhibit some
unusual driving characteristics."

Best to avoid using cruise control and varying the engine rpms. Transmission is in a learning mode and so it is adapting to how you are driving the truck which is better done with "normal" driving.

I didn’t exceed 4,000 rpm on top of what others said here. No lugging, vary rpm, and load.

Whats considered high speeds lol... i mean highway is 70mph in most places. Going to do atleast that. Ive got a 20 hour drive back from the dealership... going to be hard not to break it in like i normally drive it.
