I've been stubborn as a mule for almost two years now, insisting on sticking with the factory wheels (Lariat 20" PVD) and tires even though I hated them. I just couldn't justify shelling out the cash for a new wheel and tire combo. I was planning to run the Hankook's until they died and then switch to Falken Wildpeaks, while keeping the factory rims. Last Monday I decided to pick a fight with a curb, and the truck lost. Two tires destroyed and the rims gouged deep enough they would not hold pressure. When faced with buying two new/used OEM rims and 4 tires (the stock one's were at almost 50K, no reason to keep the remaining two of them around), I decided to bite the bullet and get something I would like a lot better anyways.
I wanted rims that matched my old school paint job, so I wound up with Mammoth 8's in 17x9 with a -6mm offset. I was a bit concerned that the 17" wouldn't fit with a PowerBoost, but tech support at American Trucks was confident that with a -6mm offset they would clear. I paired the new wheels with Falken Wilpeak A/T3W in 285/70R17 and wow what a difference. The extra sidewall of the 17" tire helps dampen the ride so much. On the 20s I could feel every concrete road expansive joint in my spine, now I don't even know they are there. I'm sure I gave up the ability to take a clover leaf at 95 mph, but in a 4x4 I'll take the ride quality over the handling any day.
Overall the brand new tire/rim combo is 6 lbs heavier (each) than the stock rim/tire (with 50K miles in weight worn off).
Also gotta say the American Trucks sales and tech support crew were awesome, so if you have a need to buy some trucks stuff online, be sure to check them out.
