Hey, I just received a notice from Ford to bring in my truck to have the rear axle half shafts replaced. I was planning on changing out my rear diff lub, but if Ford has to do this as part of the repair there is no reason for me to do it. Does anyone know if they half to open the differential to make the repair?

Sorry I’m not much help in regards to the F150, my experience is with heavy equipment, but often times if it’s just the axle shaft that’s being replaced it’s all done at the hub and the diff would never be opened.

Ford will need to pull the rear diff cover off so they can remove the clips holding the axel in place.

The axle shafts on the 9.75” rear end found on the max tow equipped vehicles are not retained by the standard c clips that the 8.8” rear end uses, so the rear cover won’t be removed. They are held in place by the axle retainer on the end of the rear end housing, just like the old 1960’s era 9” rear ends were. At most, the tech may have to top off the fluid as there will be a little loss when they remove the axle shafts. This won’t amount to much as the fluid level in the rear diff is barely enough to just get into the axle shafts for lubrication of the wheel bearings near the hub assembly..

I got that notice 4 months ago. Made an appointment for that and to replace the wiper arms. The dealer took two days to replace the wipers and did nothing with the half shafts because the bolts were not broken. They said the notice was for an inspection.

I had my diff fluid replaced at my last oil change. Was going to wait like you are thinking about the service done when they do the axle shafts but dealer advised they only need a little to top up during the replacement process so I went ahead. True to their prior advice they replaced both axle shafts for me yesterday after the passenger side bolt snapped. The work order shows only one unit of gear oil was used in the process as a top up.

The first Ford letter announcing Customer Satisfaction Program 22B34 regarding the Rear Axle Half-Shaft and Hub Assembly Replacement was dated February 14, 2023. This letter addressed issues of replacement of these assemblies when loose or separated wheel end bolt(s) were verified. Attachment II, Page 1 of 2, parts requirements lists 4 oz. Motorcraft Rear Axle fluid for this repair. I just received a new announcement for Customer Satisfaction Program 22B34 dated July 2023 referencing my VIN as a vehicle authorized for replacement of assemblies on both sides of vehicle.
