I'm having trouble finding a dealer in my area (Northern Virginia) who will take an order for the truck below MSRP and negotiate a trade. I've spoken to the 2 closest dealers to me, and they are both willing to take the $1000 deposit on the full MSRP, but nothing less. And they refuse to give me an offer for my trade in. They both want to negotiate the trade in value when the new truck is at the dealership. I've ordered F-150's before, and I've always negotiated a full deal before placing the order (Not in this area though). Is this the new normal for ordering a truck? Order the truck, then negotiate final price once it's ready for pick up?
It is a little difficult to give a trade value right now that will hold up for 2 months (or however long it takes to get the new trucks on the lots). Primarily, the used vehicle market is going UP right now, especially trucks. If you trade in right now they are likely to give you 2-5k more than your truck was worth before COVID started. If they swear to that value and then the used market goes back down or drops further than it was (which is realistic), then they're stuck with a REALLY big gap and loss.
Not saying I agree or disagree, but I've been watching the market and that's why I ended up selling my truck and deciding to wait for a 21 rather than trying to haggle these stupid dealerships (and limited availability).

Granger Ford listed a dealer contact in West Virginia that was also on the Bronco forums that was doing $1000 under invoice I believe? I can't remember which thread it was on, but you should be able to search and find it pretty easily. You have to be willing to search a pretty good radius to get the deal you are looking for.

I'm in Dallas and I'm buying from Johnson City Ford in the NE corner of Tennessee because they had the lifetime powertrain warranty that didn't require you to use their service department. I got them to agree in writing to $1300 under invoice, and to match a CarMax appraisal on my trade. The CarMax appraisal has to be dated within 30 days of delivery. Doug Still was my sales rep, and he was awesome to work with. I started out asking for $1000 under invoice, like Albert offers, but then when I saw their $599 documentation fee I asked them to meet me in the middle since Granger has a much lower doc fee. They agreed. Doug was a pleasure to work with, and his office number is listed as 423-963-9295. Tell him I sent you if you call him.

Thanks Roger and executor485. I appreciate the responses.

I have family in TN and to be honest, I'd make the drive out there without question. My wife and I were discussing just purchasing from Granger and making a trip out of picking up the new truck.

As far as trading in my 2016 KR, I am considering selling it privately now after the hassles I've had with the dealerships. What confuses me is that the dealers around here are willing to take a risk of having a $70K+ truck sitting on their lot vs possibly taking a few grand hit on a trade. Either you gamble with a few thousand or the several tens of thousands. It just doesn't make sense to me. But maybe they know something I don't know.

Roger,
I've contacted a third dealership over here, but if it doesn't go well, I'll be giving Doug a call. I greatly appreciate the referral.

EXACTLY what I did!! I rolled $6000 of negative equity into my 2017 F150 platinum, and in less than three years of ownership I just sold it at a profit of $5400! I’m driving a little car I bought for my son in the interim, and eagerly awaiting the arrival of my 2021.

They're not gambling anything on ordering a new 2021 to sell you at MSRP. If you back out they'll sell it to someone else easily. The 2021's will be a hot commodity for a while. But giving you a fixed number on a trade-in they might not take possession of for 4-5 months is a gamble because of all the unknowns. How many miles will it have when the trade-in finally happens, what if you wreck it in the mean time, what if the used truck market collapses like stated above. It's too unpredictable, and too much of a hassle to write up a contingent contract with clauses for all the unknowns. But getting them to agree to a current CarMax appraisal doesn't have that same risk, and is about the best you can do.

Good dealers will put a deal on the new truck in writing so you know all the costs upfront for the out the door price, but they cannot give you a dollar figure for a trade at this time, and if they do they would have to completely low-ball you to do it, which doesn't make sense for you.

Thanks Albert.

Both dealers mentioned here are 5.5 hrs away, so its a toss up.

I have an appointment with another dealer locally tomorrow. I'm hoping this one will work with me, if not, y'all have given me options and I really appreciate it. ??

I have to agree with @Roger350, the dealership is banking on one of two things to happen when your truck arrives. They have the truck you ordered, spec'd the way you want it, so they feel pretty confident that you will take their deal, even if it isn't as good as you could get somewhere else. If that falls through, they will have a limited amount of 2021's on the lot, so someone else is going to pay top dollar to get it.

I'm an odd one when it comes to my purchases. I go overboard on research and then when I'm finally ready to buy something I usually go with somewhere that's helped me out and has a lot of good reviews. This is where @Granger Ford comes into play for me. I've dealt with WAY too many Texas and Oklahoma dealerships in the past, and even up through a few months ago. Albert is offering solid advice and not price gouging a new model straight out the gates (hell, at $1000 under invoice and a low doc fee I'm hard pressed to say I've seen current models with that kind of price unless you spend HOURS playing the dealership game). I'm sold. They are nowhere near me, but I'm much happier to work with someone that spends their time helping out forum communities like he has been doing. I'll probably spend the extra money to have them ship it down to me as well and STILL have saved myself the frustration aggravation of dealing with local dealerships. If all dealerships would act this way, well.... That day won't happen. HAHA

I agree, Albert from Granger has been awesome to all of us on the forum. Anyone that can swing it should buy from him for sure.

For those who are unsure or just do not want to ask I have posted this in a thread but I feel it is thread worthy

What you really need to do:
Find a dealership you trust and want to do business with.
Get them to spec one out for you, that is they build with hope of selling you one.
Ask to see the complete paper, it will have many numbers on it but you are most interested in
  1. MSRP window sticker
  2. Invoice
  3. A term called holdback
  4. Also has x plan price if you are eligible.
At that point take the invoice number
- subtract $1,000 from it
- subtract any applicable rebates ask what they are with your zip code. May be none but at least ask.
That is the starting place

I see some suggestions of dealers that would do $1000 under invoice, like yourself Albert. However they are all quite far from me (California, Bay Area to be specific) do you have any recommendations of dealers I should look at in the neighboring states? Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, even Utah or Washington, Idaho?

If not...oh well X-plan it is. Thank you for constantly answering our questions Granger.

In the US here. You didnt say if your price was MSRP or not. I ordered a Lariat 502A with the 5.0L, B&O Unleashed, pano moonroof FX4 package which came out to 65,000 MSRP
It is MSRP. Hope that when they have some in the backyard, they will be more affordable.

Great info Roger350. I’m over here in Grapevine and am leery of pretty much any dealer in the Metroplex.
