I know on the rear diff, with electronic locking, friction modified is not required but what about the front? Is it required in the front with the 75w85 hypoid gear oil?

It should say it in the owners manual. Which it probably doesn’t.

I don’t think that either this generation, or even the last was available with a clutch pack LSD.

The Torsen front differential doesn’t require added friction modifier to work but some OEMs use it and even Torsen recommend using a couple ounces for a particularly noisy diff but just to quiet it up.

Open differentials don’t use friction modifiers.

The only trucks that it would make sense to have a multi plate clutch LSD would be those with 4A transaxles because it wouldn’t make much sense off-road and since Torsen work okay off-road and pretty well for pavement and gravel, they’ve pretty much replaced the old school clutch pack limited slip differentials in many applications for several reasons.

Good luck!

Looks like it does require it for the front. Below is the info out of the 2021 Service Manual.

2021 F150 XLT FX4 5.0L
My truck is a Rocky Ridge with a 6" lif so I have plenty of room to get to the front diff compared to normal trucks.

If I’m reading that right, ONLY those with the Torsen need the friction modifier.

Only if you have the Torsen though, right

Edit: Sorry for the echo. Hit submit 5 seconds later. :)

Again this is for the front Differential axle.
I think all ‘21 f-150’s 4x4’s have this or was it an option?

No. Actually very few F150's have front differentials with any kind of limited slip.

Only the Tremor and Raptor, to be precise.

Unless I have lost my mind. :)

Edit: But I wish mine did!

I have a 2022 KingRanch Powerboost 4WD.
So I would have the 4A transfer case, but the same front diff as every non-Raptor (or Tremor) that Ford has been using in the F150 for a decade.

No Torsen
No clutch of any kind
No limited slip

An open differential

You can add a friction modifier if you are hell bent. 😁
But I don't see how it would help or hurt because there's nothing in the differential that it would apply to either way.

The only trucks that are factory equipped with a Torsen front differential are Raptors. All other F-150's are equipped with an open differential. So if you're truck is an XLT it uses the lubricant as listed below.

As a tremor owner who paid for the Torsen, it’s not just raptor owners with a front Torsen diff.
