Next Ford F-150 Will Get Rid of 2,400 Parts to Cut Costs, Improve Quality

The automaker’s CEO says it wants to streamline its manufacturing process to boost profitability.

Ford wants to improve its quality and streamline its manufacturing, CEO Jim Farley and other executives told investors Monday. That means using fewer parts per vehicle, capitalizing on lucrative segments, and streamlining its supply chain. Farley said soon the fruits of its labor will be more evident and encouraged investors to “make [their] own decision” about whether or not the company was undervalued.

Farley and the heads of the automaker's three recently reorganized business divisions—Ford Blue, Pro, and Model E—gave details on how it plans to do this in the coming years. One interesting example it provided was the number of parts reductions it plans to apply to new models, particularly the F-150. The automaker claims the revised pickup truck will have 2,400 fewer parts as soon as next year. That could be everything from fasteners to parts under the hood, although specifics were not provided.

This will be done the same way tesla does it -- moving to large castings and simplifying assembly to remove fasteners. Munroe did a teardown of the hummer EV's battery pack and the number of processes and parts in it was astounding. The battery (not the vehicle) has 3,600 welds.

Yeah, not eliminating parts but part #s is the most likely scenario.

Selling shit as assemblies is becoming more and more common and getting out of control; all while being lectured about sustainability and a less disposable society.

It’s totally normal to need to spend $1k or more on an OEM ‘assembly’ that has a 50¢ part that wore out.

The turbo wastegates are a good example: the hinge ‘bearing’ is simply a rivet in a hole and might as well be designed to fail. Look at the Fordtechmakuloco channel on YouTube and he explains it best.

Meanwhile; you can build a Model-T or Mustang from scratch from parts that you can still buy.

Go find the replacement cost for the passenger front seat bottom foam from any 21+ F150. Select any trim you like... (hint: It cost me less money to convert my seats into a raptor's including replacing all front foam and covers with a little ingenuity, than it would to buy the front seat bottom foam from any trim)

Not good for those of us who keep our vehicles long term and end up working on them as they age I am guessing

you mean you're not looking forward to everything being glued together? The only way to get into tesla's new structural battery is via destruction. Even that is a huge pain in the ass.

Now you guys got me thinking regarding elimination of features. Any quick way to determine how many fewer parts a stripped XL V6 has than a loaded Limited PB?

Assuming similar cabs, it's at least 1,000lbs worth of parts, as to qty, have fun :)
