I noticed in some videos of 2021's that the rear headrests don't have the release button to permit them to fold down horizontally to minimize the rear view obstruction. Did Ford eliminate this feature, or am I missing something? See images below of 2021 and 2020:

My new XLT does not have the fold down rear head rests like my old ‘18 had. Believe me, I tried every which way to fold them when I first got my truck. No dice. I ended up just taking them out.

Why would you want to fold them down?

When using the rear view mirror while driving I find I get a better view out the rear window when the rests are folded down/removed. YMMV.

That's interesting. I have never considered folding them down, or even noticed they were there for that matter. Next time I hop in my truck that's all I'll notice I'm sure ?

I can understand why this would be a good and popular feature.
My Ranger has really tall seats and it makes it difficult to see out the rear quarter glass and rear view is limited.
So many intersections that are not 90* and you just cannot get a view out of the door glass.
If they don’t fold on the new truck, they will be removed.

The size and shape look slightly different, like perhaps the 2021s are actually taller. But I do wonder about just buying the 2020 folding ones from a Ford Dealer and having them recovered to match the 2021 upholstery. If they were the same size we might just be able to slip the covers off the 2021 headrests and put them on the folding headrests. You could just feel for the button through the material rather than having it cut out around the button.

Roger, getting previous generation folding headrests is a good idea for those who want this feature, as long as the posts fit. Here is a picture of what it looks like folded on a 2020 XLT. I plan to look at a 2021 supercab tomorrow (only one style near me) and will try to find out more.

Thanks for the picture. Not having seen these, I assumed they folded down further, but that would require a more complex hinge, so it makes sense that this is as far down as they go. Seeing this makes me think I might just buy 2 more of the smaller middle head rests, as long they have long enough posts that they can be adjusted high enough for most people to keep from banging the rear glass in a whiplash incident.

I had the chance to go to an auto show today, and can confirm some bad news. There is no way to fold down the F-150’s headrest without fully removing them. I’ve attached photos for reference from a Limited SuperCrew.

That’s a pretty good idea! It looks like they should still fit the new truck. Both style headrests use the dual metal post style that Ford has been using for a while.
