I would have thought less battery would drop more weight than a few pounds?!

The battery size isn't changing, the size of the inverter or more accurately the rating of the invertor is changing. It probably is physically larger for the 7.2 Kw unit, but I'm not sure by how much. I bet the 5-8 lb estimate is about right.
