Got a call today from my dealership. They are requiring me to pay for the windshield because of a crack in it. They said the crack makes the windshield impossible to remove without breaking it. Has anyone else had to pay for a windshield?

It sucks but makes sense. The recall is to reseal not replace.

Can you get insurance to pay for it and take it to the dealer for the work?

I had my reseal done today. They told me they only replace if they break it getting it out. They sent mine to a glass specialist(did not do it themselves). Other that having to have them clean up a few messes they made it went fine.

NOT SO FAST!!. Noticed two long black streaks near the bottom of windshield. I could not get them off. I took it back to dealer and they cannot get it to come of either. It is adhesive from the install. Dealer ordered a new windshield to be in next week :(

I am Having SunnySide Ford in Holden, Mass do the recall on my 2021 F-150 Lariat this Tuesday 5/25/2021.
They need to have their body Shop remove the glass for warranty purposes and then, their glass contractor JN Phillips will re-install. Because that isn't convoluted is it?
Asked if I could have my own Glass guy take care of it and was told No by the service manager after he looked into it. Ford needs to have a hand in the repair for it to be valid and also so that the Dealer gets paid.
They have lined up a loaner vehicle as they said it may take two days.
Will let the group know how this works out.

No way, Skip the Dealer and the Recall. If your window has a crack in it just bring it to your local glass guy and have it replaced under your vehicles insurance. Not sure how it works where you are but in Massachusetts glass is covered under our comprehensive insurance and there is no deductible.
Dont pay the Dealer for a window unless your auto insurance will re-imburse you. Call your agent and ask.

Made an appointment with my local Ford dealer where I bought the truck. Took it in and they said they would get on it asap. 4 hours later I get a call saying I can come get my truck because they have to order a new OEM windshield as they are not going to reseal but completely replace it and would call when it came in to take to a local auto glass installer.

My dealer told me they sent mine to a glass dealer to get done.
Mine would not let me bring it to my guy. A family Business that my family has had a relationship with for 40+ years.
Stated that they needed to have a hand in the job to get paid by Ford.

I think the glass shop did the remove and replace and Ford recalibrated the sensors and cameras. For what it is worth, they also damaged my windshield and I have been waiting 2 months for a replacement.

I take mine in on the 30th of this month for this recall. My windshield is tinted so who knows how it will turn out.

Intially back in May they told me the body shop needed the truck for two weeks. Now they told be they brought in a glass company to do the work and I'll get the truck back the following day.

Fingers crossed.

Had mine done. Dealer had vehicle for two days and was given a loaner. Did see a liiiitle bit of adhesive at the bottom inside of the glass but don't mind as I'd rather they use too much than not enough. No leaks after a couple of torrential down pours here in NY. Used original glass but I think they brought in a replacement, just in case.

I just got my truck back after dealing with this windshield issue. Truck also had to undergo a driveshaft inspection (per Ford), passenger tow mirror replacement (the adjustment controls did not work), oil change and tire rotation.
I dropped my truck off on a Friday. Dealership replaced the passenger mirror and sent photos of the driveshaft to Ford to determine if replacement was necessary. Like others have said, the dealership then sent my truck to a body shop nearby to perform the window re-seal. Upon removal, the window cracked. I was notified at the end of the day on Friday that my truck was not able to be returned to me as the windshield was absent. Ford offered me an Explorer as a loaner, no pickups available. I had plans to haul rock and pull a boat that weekend.
On Monday I spoke with both the body shop and the dealership. Apparently there are no aftermarket windshields yet available for the 21 f150 given all the tech (lane centering, speed sign ID, etc). Body shop was told by Ford that they expect up to 30% of glass to break on removal/replacement. Dealership told me that Ford needed to supply the factory glass and that none were present in the state... likely 3-7 day wait.
After 10 days, I was notified by the dealership that the glass was on its way. 12 days after drop off I had my truck back. Dealership was able to change the oil, rotate the tires and detail/wash before I picked it up. I expressed my frustration with the situation and they eventually offered to waive the cost of the oil change.
Bottom line: Ford and/or the Dealership need to have windshields on hand prior to removing yours.
