So my 2022 powerboost is now in the shop waiting on a heat exchanger. Much like many others.

Had the code pop up and checked out and was told it wouldn't effect drive ability but guess what?

It did. Truck started overheating and the auto shutters on the front remained closed. Had to stop by the nearest dealer and have them disconnect the shutters just so I could get the truck home and to the closest dealer. This was two weeks ago. No word on when the part will come in but I do know that there are 850 trucks sitting at dealers waiting for the same part.

Anyone else run into this issue?

I don't think that you know there are 850 trucks sitting at dealers waiting on the same part.
But I do get the point.

Did you verify that you were losing coolant?
That is 1 of 2 different issues with the exhaust heat exchanger.

The second potential issue is a faulty servo-actuator valve, which would not result in a coolant leak.

The coolant leak issue no longer requires a new exhaust heat exchanger. Instead, it requires the replacement of the cracked or distorted coolant hose coupler. It's a $5 plastic part.

If it's the faulty servo, it's one of these:

Unfortunately, the servo is not serviceable and does require the whole assembly to be replaced.

Red circles are the serviceable couplers that leak.

Blue circle is the harness connector to the servo inside the housing.

But you are right about the backorder. While just a month ago anyone could purchase the plastic coolant tubes, they no longer are listed as available for ordering.

I think Ford must be harvesting the current pipeline?

Hope you get whichever you need soon.

Not sure the part number but it's the exchange itself. It's not leaking, like some units but it must not be allowing the coolant to circulate

There's some reports that the overheating alert and subsequent derating of the motor torque is not indicative of the actual coolant temps.
In other words, the truck really isn't overheating, but it will respond to the programming as if it is.

I don't know how true that is, but it kinda makes sense because the faulty servo valve signal is what triggers the response, rather than the coolant temp sensors themselves.

Or at least that's one scenario that has been reported. Regardless, the truck can't be operated normally, as a result. It's a lousy situation for sure.

That could be as on the dash Temps seem normal but I had an obd scanner and app that was showing red line Temps of 220° and it is definitely overheating.

Although 220F is above normal, that's only 4° warmer than normal operating temp for the 2017-2020 3.5 Ecoboost.

If the exhaust heat exchanger did malfunction and continued to introduce heat into the coolant, I'm not sure it would be enough to overpower the cooling stack. But maybe eventually it could.

Still, Ford wrote code to treat that fault as though it is an overheating event. I just don't think it's injuring the truck, thankfully.

I live in a tropical region. I despise that exhaust heat exchanger. 🙄😁There's a couple of fellas who have been collecting the information and necessary components to potentially bypass the crazy thing. Can't happen soon enough for me.

Yeah, perhaps you're right. The app was showing recline at 230. When it put me in Limp mode though I checked under the hood and you could smell how hot it was.

The fact that the dash guage wasn't showing the elevated temp was a little weird.

Just have to wait for the part to get in, whenever that happens, in the meantime I'm still waiting for the dealer to get me a loaner truck as Ford only offers $35 a day, which is ridiculous considering I bought a pickup and $35 wouldn't get you a moped.

I built the bypass circuit, which wound up being easy, as the temp sensors are just 3/4" barbed hose fittings. I have the Servo-Buddy (plugs into the wiring harness and emulates the servo motor/sensor), but connector on the truck is different from the one on the motorcycle. As a result, I'm going to have to figure out which wires on the Servo-buddy connect to which wires on the truck harness. I am still struggling with that.

My 2022 PB is currently in the shop for this exact thing. The CEL came on in mid March, and after some discussion with the service department I was told I could drive it while I waited the “two weeks“ for the part to arrive. No coolant leaks. I quickly found that putting any exertion on the engine for more than a few minutes caused the truck to reduce power and claim it was overheating. I parked the truck while waiting for the part. Fast forward to Wednesday this week, after weeks of patience, I finally found the one person in the service department who seemed to lack the general apathy I’d been getting from all other channels, and miracle of miracles, they produced the part that very day and scheduled my truck for yesterday with the idea it’d be ready in a day.

After radio silence from the service department all day I began making calls and eventually made second hand contact with the service advisor. The current explanation is that while replacing the valve assembly the tech discovered that some wiring harness had melted due to excessive heat. The second-hand information I’m getting is that the replacement wiring is “five days out” and although the CEL won’t clear “the good news is that the truck is drivable.”

I refused to pick it up and have no plans to do so it until they fix it completely. Who knows what other unintended/unknown consequences are lurking.
Any idea what wiring harness might have been affected?

Took mine in on Monday for the HEX CEL, they ordered the HEX Monday afternoon/evening. Just got the call today (Friday of same week) that it was in.

Where are you located? I'm in Alberta.

I'm glad you got the part, hopefully mine is in soon.

Does anyone have the correct part number for the exhaust heat exchanger for the 2021 Powerboost? The dealer sent in the pn 5A212 and warranty denied it saying it was an exhaust pipe and that number does cover exhaust pipes for many vehicles but the hybrid is different. Not just what is pictured in the red circles but the entire unit. Thanks.
