The worst part is that the sole benefit from the exchanger is that the cab gets warmer slightly faster.

It heats up the cabin and motor both. That heat exchanger helps heat up the motor much faster than without it. That's important for the hybrid operation bringing the engine up to temp quicker so that hybrid mode kicks in sooner in cold weather. Pay attention to just how fast it heats up when cold. It also warms up the motor even in summer, it's just a much shorter cycle.
I think a good solution for summer operations is to have a variable valve that could be mostly closed. It's there enough to keep the temp sensor happy, but has the ability to shut off flow entirely if needed.
