Such a good question. Before my 2010 f150 I would say no. Went to a Ford dealer as they had a used Nissan Pathfinder we were interested in. We didn't like the condition of the Pathfinder but salesman said try out a F150. I said no way too big for us; i 'm not a truck guy. He convinced us to take it home for 24 hrs. My wife and I get in and immediately say it is way too big, 24 hrs later we bought it. When it was time to replace that truck there was no question I was getting another F150. Nice thing is with a truck you get a lot more "friends" especially when it is time to move something.

The same holds true for guys that don't drive trucks.

honestly you can’t go wrong with any ford product. I drive shit loads of rental cars on work travel and nothing drives quite like my XLT.

Have had two mustangs over the years as well, also very solidly built. Still have the ‘01 5 speed with 20K miles on her (never seen rain)

my perfect combo would be a brand new convertible mustang for booting around town and an f-150 for the dirty work

I drove a Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid that got 55 mpgs and loved it. I only bought my F-150 in 2021 because we wanted to purchase a camper. If not for the camper I wouldn't have the truck. When it's paid off I'll get another car and the truck will be used for truck things.

I vote you have both, variety is the spice of life 😜 When you have a truck, it becomes an essential tool in the belt. My other car (an older Mercedes S-Class) would not only look ridiculous hauling a mattress on the roof, it wouldn’t be nearly as safe. Even though people haul decent sized things successfully every day with cars, it’s not nearly as safe.

I had a buddy with an suv, and he had an old car battery in the back cargo area that he was returning to the store as a core. On his way to the store someone crossed the center lane and hit his suv head on. The core battery, which was originally placed in the cargo area behind the second and third row seating, launched itself forward as a 50lb bowling ball and was embedded in the dashboard where the radio was, luckily missing the back of his head.

There’s no real moral to that story, other than having a cargo area which is completely separated from the passenger compartment has its benefits. Whatever you drive, use it in the way it was intended.

Can you do without a truck! Absolutely ! We did without a truck for 18 years after owning a variety of trucks for about 10 years. We had Volvo wagons that towed. My philosophy was if it wouldn't fit in the wagon, it went on the utility trailer or into the enclosed snowmobile trailer , think 12 ft sheets of sheetrock. There came a time that the Volvo needed replacing and I decided we needed a truck again and that's how I ended up with a 21 F-150 Platinum. The fact that my brother in law works for Ford and I qualified for A plan pricing had absolutely nothing to do with my decision.;) In the end it's up to you, the minister of finance and the bank. Good luck with your decision.

Retired and not looking. The wife is looking for me.
Well, if you are not married but dating, I bought mine with an 8' bed. Works great.

A friend of mine just bought a new Toyota SR “Base Model”.

He paid $2000.00 less than I paid for my fully loaded 2021 F150 XLT RCSB 5.0 FX4, gets 4mpg less and couldn’t fit the contents of my wife’s Fiat trunk in his “bed”.

Now, don’t get me wrong… I’m not “hating” on Toyotas. They are amazing off-road trucks and run for ever & ever but DAMN!!

Do I really need a truck? I've been asking myself that lately.

Just thinking out loud.
Need or want? Tow or haul, need. Otherwise, probably want.

I’m not a fan, the Toyota 3.5 Twin Turbo has had countless main bearing failures and busted connecting rods all over the forums and they literally have tracker threads for the blown engines. That engine is a total pile of shit. Think about it this way, compared to the Ford 5.0L V8 the Toyota 3.5 TT is slower, less efficient, less reliable, and sounds just awful. It’s a losing package all the way around to both Fords premium offerings. They tried to copy the 3.5 EcoBoost and failed. Fords V6 TT is 1000% better than the Yota.

Do you really need a 75" flat screen TV? Not really, but you want one.
Do people really need a 3000 Sq. ft. house with 3 or more garages and "sitting area" in the bedroom? Not really....

BUMMER!

Toyotas have an amazing track record of reliability, but time does not stand still.

I’ve had pickups since the 70s
Still have the 79 Chev C-10 I bought new before I turned 19.
usually 2 cars and the pickup.
By the mid 90s it turned into two pickups and a car.
Early 2000s became 3 pickups and a pair of T-Birds.
Now, 3 pickups and 2 SUVs
The 79 is now retired.
The 98 Chev k1500 gets regular use
The 21 F-150 is primarily just back and forth to work
07 Trailblazer is HER backup car, while she drives the crap out of the 17 Explorer.
