I think this was based on a dealer email, not official Ford communication. I'm not saying it's wrong--it honestly makes sense for them to do this--but take it with a grain of salt.
It is also just pain numbers. 42% of EVs are sold in California - it doesn't take much beyond that to get over 50%

My dealer got 9 for this MY, and I'm number 72 on their list.

Yes, but the percentage goes up every year and they can be banked for future years. In 2025 they hit 22%. I think wants every one they can get.
Thank you for clearing this up for me. I didn’t know either of these two facts.

Given their ramp in production, I expect it will get much easier in 2023 and 2024 - the demand level just really hit them by surprise. I bet they anticipated little if any demand outside of ZEV states.

Edit: Also - it isn't a tax credit, it is avoiding a penalty.
Tax Credits AND from EV states. I'm saying they Ford is going to get the benefit of tax credits and likely sell most of those in ZEV states. I'm not necessarily saying that the ZEV reasoning is due to a tax credit.

But also, it is reasonable to assume that the demand hit them by surprise, but that's 200,000 reservations. They couldn't possibly have been surprised by the first 50,000 could they?

I think they were. Their original plans had them ramping up to 40k/yr. in 2024! So it would have been a few thousand in 2022, maybe 20k in 2023 and then 40k in 2024. They have doubled twice from those initial plans.

I'm no auto industry expert, but that is really surprising to me. Tesla sold almost 500,000 units in 2020. The Mach-e had 40,000 reservations. Ford sold 780,000+ F series trucks in 2020.

They would have been surprised by 50,000 reservations on what is essentially the exact same as the already wildly popular F150 except electrically powered with a sub 5 second 0-60 time?

Well, apparently I'm in a ZEV state so I hope that means I'll get lucky. *knock on wood*

Yeah ZEV states get priority because Ford saves extra money ($2-3k per vehicle is what I have seen around) for each BEV sold in a ZEV state because they don't need to buy offset credits from Tesla. You can always petition your state elected officials to become a ZEV state.
Or petition for the removal of ZEV State status…since these penalties are paid by the consumers.

Many F150 drivers don’t want electric.

I'm guessing the market for an EV truck is at least half people who don't drive trucks now. I haven't driven a truck in 20 years but mostly because I don't want to take the fuel efficiency hit to gain the extra benefits over a mid-sized SUV. If you take away the operating cost penalty then lots of people who commute, or drive a lot of miles, but don't "need" a truck all of a sudden can justify it. Conversely, people who "need" a truck often use it in ways that make EV trucks not an option yet (i.e. towing, plowing, etc.).

And a lot of people want an electric truck that would never consider an ice one
I would never consider ford of any sort of it wasn’t the first EV truck available at a decent price. Hate giving up adaptive cruise, lane keeping, heated seats and power mirrors but it is what it is for what I’m willing to spend. Have a first 20 seconds res for a cheap Silverado so we’ll see how it goes for 2 years with the F150.

this is also the first EV capable of carrying five people and their luggage. 7 years ago I was looking at the XC90, the model X, and the GL350. The only one that existed when I needed a vehicle was the GL, and I've loved the mileage of the diesel so far, but I still want something electric. Hopefully this will also eventually lead to electric expeditions/explorers.
