I came across this YouTube video of a poor chap in Canada that had his Ioniq5 totaled because the cost of a replacement battery was more than the original price he paid for the car.

This really makes me wonder what the cost of the hybrid and ev batteries are for the PB and Lighting. Has anyone looked into this?

I didn’t watch the video but the HVB warranty is 8yr/160,000km.
This reminds me of the guy who bought an $80,000 Lightning and tried to drive it 400miles to the UP and made the news with his incompetent ranting about it running out of charge and needing to be towed. How about the guy in the Tesla who turns on semi-autonomous driving and passes out in the driver seat? I so love how the lowest common denominator sets policy! Rant over

Sounds like a greedy dealer doing insane markup on parts. I've seen it myself before when I was a Ford tech, some dealers would mark up parts by 2x or more above normal retail price.

A quick google search shows this exact battery part number to be roughly $30,000 USD new, or about $7000 remanufactured, both direct from Hyundai.

$30,000 is still absolutely ridiculous.

EV's appear to be disposable vehicles. After the battery warranty expires and it ultimately fails, it seems to be cheaper to purchase a new vehicle than to replace the battery. At minimum, I feel manufacturers should be required to list the current cost to replace the battery, including labor, on the window sticker. I don't know how long a typical EV battery lasts, but I'm guessing that a significant portion of consumers are unaware of the replacement cost when they purchase an EV. For an F150 Lightning, it looks like it will cost you at least $32k to replace the entire battery.

I for one was shocked at the cost. I as thinking these things probably cost 10k, boy was I low.

Hyundai or the dealer is ripping him off. With Tesla, the battery is about twice that size for about 1/4 that price. I guess the Hyundai doesn't have a titanium under shield to protect the battery.

Retired and not looking. The wife is looking for me.
There is a common theme running throughout this thread. It implicates each and every one of us.

Look in the mirror and you will see the problem!
