Well I just finished cleaning mine up...

I didn't want to deal with Ford Motor Company as they're sick of dealing with me after my 2019 woes and I know damn well they won't fix it anytime soon. Figured I'd do it myself to save the time and headaches of Ford saying "normal characteristic of the F150". My rust issues weren't as bad as others....

I did exactly as the OP....taped off hoses/wires, sprayed dissolver on, washed off, dried it then painted. Will buy some CRC tomorrow from west marine. 2 hrs of my time is better than multiple trips to dealer and days without my truck. Hell I went over 100 days without my 2019 bc Ford refused to replace the carpet after ripping it out 3x due to water leaks and finding mold and refusing to buy the truck back.

Unicorn man...we get it you don't need to comment how you're going to hire Morgan & Morgan.

Here are some before and after photos.

Purchased a new 2021 PB Platinum 4x4 last week and found rust just like everyone else on this forum. Called my dealership and talked with my sales rep and the service manager, sent them pictures and the dealership said go get two quotes for undercoating service and they will reimburse me. They wanted to make right.

Good for you! That’s a good dealership willing to stand behind what they sell.

After reading several threads about this problem I went ahead and just finished up painting my rear axle. Mine only had 25 miles on it when I bought it two weeks ago and it looked like it had seen several winters here in the Northeast which is totally unacceptable in my opinion. I wasn't going to wait for Ford to do anything so I picked up some supplies and knocked it out over the course of 2 days. I first degreased, then wiped down with mineral spirits and let it dry. I took some painters tape and masked off all of the brake lines, galvanized nuts, labels and anything else I didn't want coated and then sprayed on a coat of Rustoleum Rust Reformer. I let it dry for 24 hours and then gave it 3 good coats of Rustoleum Satin Enamel. While I was under the truck I also did the exhaust hangers with some VHT Flameproof header paint and baked on the coating per the instructions on the can. Overall, I am happy with the results but it was something I shouldn't have had to do.

I did something similar on mine, gotta say, that is one of the worst i've seen on a new truck. Ford really dropped the ball with this.

Shame on Ford for installing rusted parts anywhere. This ugly fact was brought up before I bought mine last May. It appears they were stocked outdoors left out in the rain. I'm sure this was brought up in some of their meetings and the decision was made to ignore it, "it's only surface rust." Thanks Ford, send out a manager with a can of Naval Gel and a wire brush to get it off my truck.

Yeah it was disappointing to see that on my new truck, especially one so expensive. The rest of the undercarriage is spotless which makes me think that the rear axle assembly must have been sitting outside for awhile exposed to the elements waiting to be installed. I realize it's only surface rust, but to me, rust is never acceptable on a new vehicle. I'll keep my eye on it and touch it up every year. I also bought some black Fluid Film to spray inside of the frame and any other areas that may be prone to rust in an attempt to stay ahead of it.

I can't get anyone to give me a quote on it. Everyone wants to undercoat the entire truck. I guess I will do it myself like everyone on here has done.

I live in SoCal and the first few places I called wouldn’t work on undercoating since it’s so rarely done out here. So far the closest place was an hour away from where I live.

I went ahead and followed suit with some of the diy people have done here. I did not get as close to the wheels and brakes as other though since I didn’t want to accidentally damage my chrome rims clear coat. When I have tools to remove jack up and remove my wheels I’ll probably do it then.
  • Rustoleum rust dissolver gel
  • Bottle brush to spread gel
  • Wire brushes to remove harder rust spots
  • Painters tape to protect anything Id don’t want to paint or put rust remover on
  • Cardboard to protect from over spray
  • Rustoleum Pro Enamel spray paint

Before I did the painting I did mask off the stuff and did one more round or brushing to get some of the stubborn rust off. I ordered a set of drill attachment brushes to help and that significantly boosted how effective it was

Anyway I ordered some of the CRC marine corrosive preventer that was mentioned but was initially gonna go with fluid film. I’ll apply it over the weekend after this dries thoroughly and I give it a nice wash.

Has anyone seen rust this bad? Am I wasting my time trying to get Ford to do anything? This is a 2021 SCab with 3400 mile. I bought it new in Jan 3rd 2022.

Thats pretty bad, one thing is curious though, that barcode sticker should not have any paint on it if it came from the factory. Did you already try and spray it?

No, I have not done anything except remove the leaf spring blocks.
The pics above from "redtrucktravel" show similar paint on the barcode sticker.

Might be different with our job 1 '21 trucks. As far as I know, the stickers were applied after coatings were placed. Could be wrong. But anyways, that seems like alot of rust, Ford will tell you its normal however. Might have to twist the dealers arm to get them to fix it, or do it yourself.

Here's my axle with the paint on the sticker straight from the dealer with only 25 miles on it. When I saw the paint I assumed the entire axle had been painted but I was really surprised it had already rusted that badly and you know what they say when you assume anything. Needless to say it didn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. Hopefully by doing it right the first time I won't have to deal with the rust again. However, rust in tight places like this is almost impossible to eliminate 100% so I think I will be addressing this problem again down the road, which is what Ford should be doing from the factory. It's ridiculous to think that on ANY new vehicle, let alone one that costs as much as these trucks do, the owner would have to spend additional time and money to fix something such as rust on the very first day they own it. I have to say I love my truck and I think Ford did an amazing job with the Gen14 F150s, but the one thing that has left a bad impression on me is the rear axle rust. Sorry for the rant.
