I feel like the 3.3 section needs a little lovin. So I’m here to report that I’ve currently done a little over 70k miles in 15 months of ownership and this little sweetheart hasn’t skipped a beat.

I bought this truck as my work truck (self employed) and it gets driven hard for 10+ hours per day going up/down mountain passes and on forest service roads with many miles of washboard torture mixed in. This truck has only been driven empty twice; all of my miles are with 1,200-1,500 lbs of payload in the bed or occasionally towing 5-7k of stuff on a flatbed equipment trailer. I average between 19-21 mpg with a payload (no trailer attached) KO2’s for tires, and the elephant ear tow mirrors for added wind resistance.

I do an oil change once a month, trans/diff service every six months, air filters every 20k and tires once a year. The 10r80 still shifts great, though it obviously has much less torque to stress it compared to any other engine in the lineup.

I should cross 100k by early-mid summer, and hope to get 500k out of it. I might be the only one that’s sad to see the 3.3 being discontinued, but I plan on testing the theory of the 3.3 being a durable fleet engine.

Man, I came real close to buying a 2022 XLT 302a with a 3.3L unicorn I saw at a nearby dealer just because of stories like this. I hate the fact that this engine has been discontinued. The 2.7L is a proven solid engine, but this just seems like it will go forever like the old AMC/Jeep 4.0L.

Glad I’m not the only one that will miss it, and it really does seem like all of the engines they currently offer are really stout.

For those that are curious about performance while loaded 0-60 is around 10 seconds while hauling 1500 lbs of payload in the bed (3.73 gears). A 6% mountain pass climbing 5k ft in elevation is usually done in 7th gear (sometimes 6th) at 3500 rpm’s with the same 1500 lbs of payload in the bed. Towing 7k lbs up the same grade is usually 3rd or 4th gear and 5-6k rpm while keeping up with the 65 mph speed limit. It’s just screaming it’s head off while doing it, which will be familiar to anyone who has towed with trucks from yesteryear 😂

I've had my truck for a year now and the 3.3L has been good to me so far. Glad to hear that I am not the only one who likes it.
