Hi all,

Looking for some experiences with the 3.31 rear end in the new 2021 - 5.0L

Currently driving a 2019 - 5.0L w/ 3.55 gears.

I am not concerned with towing or fuel mileage in the least (sounds odd, they are bottom of the priority list)

Will I notice a significant(or any)difference off the line/low end with the 3.31?

I'm happy with the 3.55 currently but I'm nervous for a sluggish difference. I enjoy some spirited driving from time to time.

When I spec'd the 3.31 on the V8 it was done mistakenly as I ordered 2 trucks, the other is A 3.5 PowerBoost with the 3.73. Didn't catch the mistake until it was too late and sent to the plant.

Any feedback would be great,

Thank you.

I have a 2018 5.0 with 3.31 elock and it has never felt sluggish to me but it is 2WD. I had a 2013 3.5 ecoboost with 3.31 elock and power seemed about the same. MPG was actually better by 1 MPG with the 5.0.

my 5.0 3.31 SuperCab 8ft box is plenty spirited. Avg mpg climbing daily.
I opted for the 3.31 for fuel mileage--most of my commute is freeway at 70+
I still have the old truck for real work.

What they all said. I'm coming from a 2020 3.5 EB with 3.73 gears and my 2022 5.0 3.31 gears pulls just the same over the same roadways to and from the boat dock. Heck, dare I say better... I say that because towing with it seems "natural" for it if that makes sense.... I thought there would be a lot of roaring to get up to speed, not at all with what I'm pulling (5K lbs).

I have a 2022 5.0 with 3.31 and I grin like an idiot every time I get on the gas. It currently only has 1350 km on it so likely not even really broken in yet. Im coming from a 2014 GMC Sierra with a 5.3 and 6 speed. It had 33's and 3.42 gears. This truck just blows it out of the water.

Im a little worried about once I put 33's on it but it sounds like it's still gonna be just fine. Ordered a pedal commander to alleviate any potential sluggishness.

Edit: I just realized this thread is from 2021 haha

Being this my first F150, I have a 5.0/3.31 and it is anything but inadequate when I floor it.

Its also interesting when you change the drive mode from Normal to Sport or Towing and then floor it. Though with a light rear end, I tend to do that in a straight line ...... just in case.

*updated...supposed to multiply those numbers not add them...

The new 10-speed's have really low 1st gear, so essentially a new truck with 3.31 is the same as an old 6-speed with 3.73

10-Speed
1st 4.69 + 3.31 = 8 to 1 for the tire
*4.69 x 3.31 = 15.52 to 1
6-Speed
1st 4.17 + 3.73 = 7.9 to 1 for the tire
*4.17 x 3.73 = 15.55 to 1

That with the power that today's engines produce, I don't think you'd ever know the difference.
Only difference will be RPM at cruising speeds. My 3.55's run the engine at 1,700 rpm at 71 MPH.
That 10th gear at 0.63 to 1; engine at 1700 trans output is spinning at 1,071 through 3.55 rear axle spins the tire at 301.69 rpm. **Speed determined by diameter of the chosen tire..

How did you get 3.55s on a ’21+ 5.0L or we’re you referring to an older truck?

Oh, sorry. No I have the 3.5L EB in my truck. Which I could not get the 3.73's in, the highest I could go was the 3.55.

I don't have it yet I'm still up at work. Pretty much bought the truck and then headed up to work on the 21st. Been here ever since(oil patch). The PC is in the mail and will be delivered next week. But I'm dropping my truck off at the dealership to get Eibach kit, tires, linex etc etc done on the 9th. SO I won't actually be able to test it out until the following weekend. Truck should be done on Friday the 13th👻 .

I'm going to make a post regarding the mods I get done once I get to drive it a bit and I'll touch on how the Pedal Commander works. Also how the 33s affected it.

You're saying it didn't affect it much adding bigger tires?

Going from the factory Hanook 275 to General 305, basically both are 33" tall, but 10" vs 12" and 40ish vs 60ish lbs. respectively. So wider and heavier than the factory tire. Getting that heavier tire to rotate (acceleration) is where I noticed a change. Not terrible, I almost don't notice it, nevertheless it's an increase of ~20 lbs. of rotational mass now. I do feel that I'm driving more aggressively (find myself 5-10 MPH over the limit lately) but I don't know if it's because I feel invincible, over compensating for the heavier tires, or hyper aware of the changes I made. I think once I start driving normal again, I won't notice anything. I did get to the lake on New Years and I didn't notice any change in light to light traffic or going up a known step grade in Austin between 360 and 620 on 2222; she just stayed in 7th gear and pulled like a champ.

I'm asking about the pedal commander because even before the wider/heavier tires, I felt I needed a little more zip in my take offs.

I did look into re-gearing, but man-o-man, the thought of tearing into a new truck made me tear up a little. And then after reading a rear diff gearing comparison article in Trailer Boat I felt better about the 3.31 and the 5.0.
