I'm looking to upgrade my 2012 F150 with 5.0 motor. I want my next truck to have more bottom end power and not have to rev it to the moon to get the power. I've never owned a diesel, driven them a few times but would this be good option for a daily commuter?

I don't have direct experience, but everything I've read about the Diesel is that it is a fine engine. It's not going to be the fastest thing out there, but you're going to get probably the best MPG of any other F150 in highway driving, and it's going to have no trouble towing. It's a rare engine but everyone I've seen who owns it loves it.
I really considering getting the option, but the Powerboost's generator option really won me over.

I had it in my 18’ Platinum. I’m not shy about saying that it’s the best engine in the F150 in my opinion. 28k miles, 18.9 was the absolute worst I got, 30.7 highway was the best, 23-28 consistently most of the time. Ran smooth and efficient and maintenance on it isn’t hard at all.

Good info, thanks. What made decide to switch to EB?

Lack of availability of the 3.0 in the Platinum trim (delays). The 3.0 will run circles around the EB and powerboost in mileage and reliability, both empty and towing.

I'm not sure about your reliability claim but whatever...

As far a diesel goes as a daily driver? I've had them in the past (Super Duties and Dodge/Rams). A semi was my "daily driver" for a few years, too. Oil changes were twice as expensive and fuel filters were an added expense. Then, getting fuel, you need patience because you will more often than not be waiting for a diesel island to open up. Also, the pumps invariably have diesel slopped on them so you need a glove to keep it off you. Otherwise you will smell like a diesel mechanic once you are done filling the truck up.
So for me, a diesel isn't an option.

Not sure you why you’re commenting on a 3.0 thread if aren’t sure about it’s reliability and have never owned one. ?? fueling up and gloves are a none issue. I’ve never heard anyone complain about that until now. Can’t compare the 3.0 to the heavy duty diesels either. Daily driving a Superduty 6.7 is not the same as daily driving a baby diesel in a half ton. I did for 2 years and it get better gas mileage than the EB and the powerboost.

Appreciate all the feedback. I am struggling with my decision to go with PB with all the new tech and unknowns or the 3.0. I'm not too interested in just the EB. But it seems delays in production will buy me more time to figure it out. Haha.

The 3.0 with 3:31 gears.

Most if not all of the Power Boosts that I have seen have 3:73 gears. I believe that is how they have the highest torque, but that comes at the price of mediocre fuel mileage. Ive read a lot of Power Boost guys complaining about mpg.

Check the EPA numbers on the window stickers of all the engines. The 3.0 will shock you. I have a 5.0 too and I am definitely going to buy a 3.0 Power Stroke if I ever see a white 2021 Super Cab. I have recently driven 3 - 3.0 Power Strokes and they will throw you back in the seat from 0 - 70 and there is still pedal there above 70. I did not want to push it because all the trucks had new engines, but I left with the impression that 100 mph was no problem and that it would not take long to get there.

If you dont mind buying out of state, Mullinax Ford in Florida has 3.0 Lariats for around $52,000. An XLT for $50,000 is a decent price so $52,000 for a Lariat is a killer deal IMO.

My daily driver is a 3.0 diesel - a 2007 Jeep with a Mercedes Benz OM642. It's an excellent motor, and after correcting some of the typical Chrysler mistakes, it's been great. With a 5spd transmission and 3:73 gears I get (up to) 29 MPG highway, & (constantly) 23 city.

I would be getting the F-150 3.0, except that this truck is "ours", and my wife doesn't like diesel

I've had Ecoboosts without any reliability issues is my point.

My points were general diesel ownership regardless of what y'all are driving.... Never heard? It's smell not hearing. Apparently you are nose blind. ??

Ford has been sued over Ecoboost reliability and MPG multiple times. 3.0 hasn’t. And most working men don’t care about what their hands smell like or look like, that’s why I’ve never heard that complaint. Don’t buy a diesel and keep your hands clean then. Your preference doesn’t change the fact that the EB isn’t the better engine ?

Law suits are often a joke. Mpg isn't a reliability issue. And initially it was an intercooler issue that got everyone all wound up early on, not the engine.. With so few F150 diesels sold (only about 50,000 total in 19 and 20) you don't have many out there to get a large reliability numbers. Only a couple hundred diesel owner issues might have a higher percentage than with the 100's of thousands of Ecoboost engines out there. I don't think you'd have bought an Ecoboost if they were unreliable. Apparently you did based on your vehicle.
"Working men" would include semi drivers in your definition, I think. Look at any truck stop diesel islands. You'll see a majority of the professional drivers hop out of their trucks, open their tool box, grab gloves and start pumping diesel. They aren't trying to keep their manicures all pretty. ;) It's because they don't want to smell it after they get done pumping.

All I'm doing is bringing up things that someone that has never owned a diesel will contend with. I'm not commenting on their dependability because I haven't owned a baby diesel.

I never once said the Ecoboost is better or not. All I said with my way over a million miles of diesel driving you deal with unique ownership things that a gas driver hasn't dealt with or experienced.
