Would any one have the dimensions of the 26 gallon vs 36 gallon tank?
I have a new left over 22’ and it looks like I have a 26 gallon tank even though my window sticker says “max tow 36 gallon tank included no charge”

When I have 40 miles until E and my gas light is on, it only takes 21.5 gallons when I fill it.

Titan makes gravity tanks to install in the bed for pickups but not direct replacement gas tanks for the factory gas tanks. This would violate EPA regulations that apply to gas fuel tanks. They make tanks for diesel but not for gasoline to replace the factory fuel tank.

Ford and Ram provide large gas tanks as an option so buying a larger one and getting the settings changed is doable. I chose to buy a supercrew with the max tow package which included the larger gas tank. I wanted a super cab but none were available within 400 miles of my house that had the larger gas tank.

If your truck is a misbuild, that should absolutely be covered under warranty and the dealer should replace that. I don’t have a good answer for you, but definitely keep us updated

yeah, I’m not sure but I’m almost 1000 miles from home with a loaded 24ft trailer.

The tanks are the same externally, so you can't easily tell the difference. You can check part numbers if you can get under the truck and take a look.

Yes I do know they look the same, but I have a skid plate under mine so I can’t see the part number easily. Looks like I’ll have the dealership do the next service and look into it.

Youll need to flash the PCM also to the 36 Gallon strategy.

Do you know if that’s something that can be done with a 2 day frds subscription? I’m really missing the bigger tank, but the savings on got on my truck meant option shopping wasn’t possible.

Fdrs wouldn’t be an option to flash the other strategy. It will only flash the strategy recommendation for your truck.

It would require loading it a different way.

I think some people change the fuel capacity setting from pcm to ipc:

I haven’t looked at it a whole lot but I know for sure the strategy is different based on fuel tank. May be another way around it I would have to look into it

Gotcha. From what I’ve read others haven’t gotten the distance to empty or fuel gauge itself to work properly.
Guess I’ll just deal with a smaller tank for now!

Oh then it will require the strategy change. I know it will work.. I just didn’t know if there were an easier way.

I found this thread to be the most helpful regarding the fuel pump question. It's not for a '21, however the gas tanks are the same all the way back to '15.

fuel pump differences

There are litereally dozens of threads at the same site with tank swap write ups. Too many to list. As said earlier, there is some disagreement about fuel pumps among them however.

Also I was able to finally find the correct part numbers for a '21 fuel pump with the standard tank, and the extended range tank. The poster I was discussing it with disagrees that a new pump is necessary, however I think he's not getting the benefit of his larger tank because he has the wrong fuel pump.
so are you saying that a 36 gallon from a 2015+ will work? Will the 21+ pump and sending unit mate up correctly?

the tank on my truck is from a '15.

regarding the fuel pump, i do not know if the pumps are the same from a v6 to a v8 engine, or if direct injection makes a difference. i bought only the tank from the '15 and then searched out the correct part number for my application (for the fuel pump), '21 f150 with the extended range tank and the 5.0 motor. the part number is probably in this thread somewhere. I also found pics on another forum that the clearly showed the extended range fuel pump was a little bit taller than the pump for a 26 gallon tank. i am satisfied that i have the correct pump as i've gone over 600 miles on a tank of gas. the shorter fuel pump would have not gone as far as it wouldn't reach the bottom of the tank. IIRC the part number from rock auto is pfs1350. The Ford number is different and I'm sure easily available searching thru any of the factory Ford parts suppliers.

i would suggest buying a ford supplied part. i read on another forum a member did this swap and bought an aftermarket pump and some of the connectors were different and it was throwing an evap code or something.

Yeah I knew you have to do the pump too. But didn’t know if the 15 fuel tank would work with the 21+ tanks
