First off this is my first post and first Ford truck ever… coming from a decade of running 3/4 ton rams and while I loved the deleted diesel it just wasn’t practical and started to have issues so I fell in love with the King Ranch I have had about a week or so now…so forgive my ignorance on some of this stuff I just haven’t had a vehicle this “tech driven” and trying to learn a lot quickly.

I have noticed while accelerating slowly from a stop the transition from the ev to the gas motor seems very rough and maybe that’s normal ?? Seems like it ideas rough for a few min also. I don’t feel the ev to gas or vice versa at higher speeds at all but that lower gearing where it kicks in and skips 2nd is a pretty good jolt that I have a hard time believing is normal . I just purchased it and it has 34k miles so is there a way to tell if it has the latest updates and all that iv read about clearing this up , and if I want the dealer to do it at the next maintenance what do I need to tell them to look at as far as updating ?? I do love the truck and miss the Cummins sometimes but this truck with the interior has made the transition very nice I will say … any help would be greatly appreciated… thanks !!

I would say this describes my experience as well. However, I owned a few earlier hybrids from the 2000's, and the feeling is very familiar to me. Could it be better? Probably. I've heard the 2024+ models are somewhat smoother. But I think this is just how the hybrid system works, and what you're observing is normal. The 10r80 transmission in these trucks doesn't help though. It has always been rough around 3rd gear.

From what I have read, the engine and hybrid motor need to align their positions before engaging one or the other. This is why the truck won't run on just the engine if they hybrid system gives up the ghost. It always needs just a little power to spin the motor into alignment. If it's the other way around, I imagine spinning up a big heavy engine from 0 rpm to whatever it needs for your given speed and gear needs a bunch of torque and I think this is a little of what we're feeling too.

Some of this is from what I've read and some is speculation - would love to hear someone more familiar with the nuances of how it works chime in too.

TLDR - I think what you're describing is normal.

Mine was the same. I used ForScan to reset the trans learning tables and it was 1000% better FYI.

I did it myself. I'm pretty sure the dealer can do the same.

This describes our 2024 exactly, but we only have a few hundred miles on it. The Tacoma hybrid we test drove did a MUCH better job with the EV/ICE transition from a stop.

Just a follow-up after putting a few miles on it… after 1400 miles, our 2024 is doing WAY better than at the very beginning. Transition from EV to ICE when leaving a stop is still noticeable, but is much much smoother than it was at 200 miles. Transition while moving is seamless.

The biggest issue is when calling for increasing power like accelerating, the truck skip shifts to 3rd and then engages 3rd while starting the ice and it can be jerky. You can start the ICE by quick slapping the throttle and then rolling into it. Play with that if for no other reason than to learn that little trick. With auto hold on, as soon as the light goes green slap the throttle and start rolling into it.

When light power is called for the 21-23 will start the ICE before clutching it in, the 24s and up can only clutch it in to start it and I'd theorized that's tough to do flawlessly like those with the belt starter like 21/3s can. No tunes for 24s and may not be for some time, but removing 1-3 skip shift helps out quite a bit.

I have a 24 PB and never know if it’s in battery or hybrid unless I look at the tech. I never know when the ICE is running and I’m getting about 42% all electric driving.
