Is 3.73 going to be to much for mostly a daily driver 22 Reg Cab 5.0. ?

Some light towing occasionally but thinking more of something to help wake up that engine at lower RPMs mostly.

Hoping that 10 spd might help tone it down.

Was going to order today but wanted to do some more research.

I was in the same boat, sucks we can’t get the 3.55 ratio. I opted to keep the 3.31 ratio , my towing will be under 3000 pounds for 6 months of the year. The truck is rated for around 10,000 with the 3.31 ratio. I thought the 3.73 would be a little too much and give up 1-2mpg. If you don’t tow much I’d stick with the 3.31, still plenty of power with the 5.0

3.31 is fine
I have a SuperCab with an 8’ box 4x4
plenty zippy leaving a light and I have no qualms whatsoever about towing with it.
The gearing is not optimal for dragging heavy loads, but is suitable for occasional use.
My lifetime fuel mileage has finally creeped up to 20mpg, but I have very little city traffic to deal with.

I don’t expect my f150 handle heavy stuff nearly as well well as my 98 k1500, but I don’t work that as hard as I used to either.

Hell, I spent about 30 yr dragging heavy stuff with my 79 c10, 4spd, 454, and 3.08 rear gears.
454, needed the 3.08 for fuel mileage ( and we know those need all the help they can get), but pulling a steep grade—-3rd gear and engine wound tight, but, it got the job done.. still have that truck as well.

Any plans on changing tire size? If you change to a shorter (smaller diameter tire) you'll effectively increase your final drive ratio. Opposite if you go taller (larger diameter tire).

Here is a nice 'effective gear ratio' calculator to help out.
https://tiresize.com/gear-ratio-calculator/

My personal opinion, if you are not driving >60% of your time on the highway for long trips, then go with as low a gear ratio as they offer. I wish I could have gotten the 3.73 with my truck, but lowest I could get was the 3.55, which I'm totally fine with the. the 10 spd trans makes up for just about anything you choose. 1st gear is so low, and 10th is so high, that I doubt you'd even know.

10th gear, stock tire size, with 3.55 gears I'm less than 2,000RPM at 70mph

I have the 3.73 in my 5.0 and it’s fantastic. Do not regret going for that, i also got the 9.75 axle with it with a e-locker

I get around 20-22MPG with a mix of city and highway

only downside was it took them 6 months to build my truck I’m guessing because the 9.75 is used in the heavy duty packages

I ordered a XLT reg cab/short bed (aka "standard bed" these days)
Ahhh, awesome i also got an XLT, I went with the supercab with 301A, pretty awesome so far.

Yours will probably be even more peppy than mine being lighter

Yes, it is a little much although I can't say if I would get the taller gears.

I thought that the three overdrives available in the 10 speed would help but the gear spread isn't different when the short gears are selected and I think that they did a good job optimizing the transmission for the lower numerical rear gear ratios.

In 100% city driving I am getting 12.5mpg and that's driving very conservatively, timing lights and not getting crazy with the brakes or gas pedal. I thought that it wouldn't matter much around town and only impact highway mileage but I am curious about if I had something other than the 3.73 axle.

Here's a table of gears with speed/rpm with 3.31 on the left and 3.73 on the right with 265/70R18 tires from:

http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Ford F-150 2022 Reg Cab 5.0 axle ratio EE889EEF-A289-41BF-ABF9-0BC2EDB6B407

As it is, I am getting nearly identical mpg to my 2001 Lincoln Navigator with the 4 speed 4R100, 32V 5.4 V8 also with a 3.73 axle. So those extra six speeds really don't help much with mileage in my daily driving. Granted, I don't get stuck between gears in the F-150, so I can pretty much drive at any speed without discomfort.

I'm an old need for speed guy or at least hard acceleration and the motto for a lot of gear heads was "Don't fear the gear" That was my reasoning for the 3.73. Like the other saying goes... ymmv (I'm hoping that means your mileage may vary. least that's what I always thought it meant.)

I’m getting somewhere between 20 and 22 MPG in mixed highway/city driving with the 3.73’s

I test drove a 3.31 off the lot and it ‘feels’ like my truck gets up to speed with pushing on the pedal less. Not sure if that helps or hinders mileage though

Ouch! 12.5 is not exactly the # I was looking for!

I have a 2021 RCSB FX4 with tghe 5.0 and 3:73 gears. 3:73s are perfect with 10 spd auto. I had a 2018 with 3:31 gearing. Theres not enough difference in MPGs to worry about. 3:73s give you that low end pep that I love

I added the 3.73 locker to my RCSB 5.0.
You get the better rear end, not just different gears. Bigger axles, beefier gear.

Will be better for towing, even if its just once in awile.

I will be adding a snow plow to mine once i get it. Just for my drive, but why not get the heavier duty rear at a crazy low price?

I think its crazy not too. At that price, I think folks are crazy for not getting it.

Im scheduled for week of 6/27. Can report once received.
