I have a 2021 Powerboost 4x4 Lariat. 30k miles. Long story short I'm on the interstate running about 73 and the truck alarms to reduce power. I had no weight in the truck, no trailer, only two passengers. I look through the menus and it's due to the transmission temp as its at 285. Has anyone had this issue and did the dealer repair it or did the transmission have to be replaced? I don't want the dealer to bandaid it to get me through the warranty period.
Thanks again and sorry this is my introduction to the forum.

This seems to be the engine temp when mine was the transmission or should read deeper? Thanks for the response.

Go look at the cooler and make sure something like some leaves are not covering it up... You might also look for stuff like pollen (that stuff runs in rivers over in South Carolina) hasn't collected in it.

Had a similar issue. My transmission was overfilled...likely when they did the heat exchanger service. Its been fine since.

Did you take a picture of the transmission temps at 285?

Mercon ULV can handle some high temps before it's "cooked", so to speak. But if mine hit 250F or above I wouldn't be able to feel good about it for the rest of the life of the truck. It'd torture me. 🤣

I'd at least pull a sample from the fill plug so I could SEE the color. And of course check the fill level at the same time.

I'm the same. I didn't get a pic the interstate was packed and the oh s&%t feeling I just didn't think. I'm gonna pull a sample this evening when I get home to see the color.

First pic is 3 drops on a white background for clarity. The second is a strange I used to pull the sample. The third is the fill level. It's 80 to 100 percent full with it warm. It's amazing it didn't do sooner. I only had this for about 6 months as it was certified pre-owned.

So what's the opinion of the sample darkness? I routinely handle oil samples but I never touch the automatic trans fluids.

Thanks again for everyone's help diagnosing.

Apologies on the clarity of the pic. It was hard to hold still to allow focus under the vehicle.

Do you know what temp the transmission was when you measured?

The service manual calls for it to be between 205-215F. Which on my Powerboost requires more than 15-20 miles of regular driving to reach.

The color is less than black. (I can't really tell from the syringe photo, but is it translucent? Can you get a fresh quart and compare?
It's not "cooked", in my eyes. But I certainly would be watching for any odd behavior while I planned for a "fluid service" at some point in the future. (but I'm kinda paranoid regarding fluids. I like everything to be fresh. It's my one area of possible OCD)

On a 10r80, it's just me dropping the pan and letting it drip-drain. Getting a really good look at the pan for debris. You will only get about half the fluid out. (6-7quarts) go a few thousand miles and repeat. At that point you have at least a much fresher "blend" of new VS old.

Again, no panic with that nice deep red translucency. But get your level right. It's pretty crucial on these.

you really cant tell the whole story on looks
it needs a sample at a lab to see whats what.

but if it smells like burnt biscuits and has shiny stuff in it ...its a given there is an issue.
your temps are WAY above what is normal .

agree dropping pan and take a look and let the gunk drain out then recheck.
if it was me
i would have it evacuated, and refilled and clean drain pan and have a trained transmission guy look at the guts

I got a service appointment scheduled so hopefully they can get things right under warranty. I just don't have alot of faith thus far. I got enough for a lab also. Thanks again.

These symptoms don't make sense. Transmissionsons in non-tow type vehicles have long had no cooler, just "oil pan cooling." So what's going on? I suppose interstate speeds could be the cuprit, but I don't think so. There has to be a flow restriction for the oil or possibly the cooler air flow. As a note, I had a problem, fixed under warranty, where the transmission woud not move out of Park unless it was warmed up at idle for some 5 or more minutes. Turned out to be a missing o-ring/gasket inside the transmission. So the dealer needs to open up the transmission and have a look-see. For example, they might find an o-ring/gasket that was pinched and came apart with parts of it floating around until it blocked or restricted flow somewhere.

I'm gonna insist at this point as I don't trust the long term life.
