My truck went down last week with a bunch of warnings. Dealership is now telling me the hybrid motor in the transmission and the high voltage battery need to be replaced. The motor is covered under my warranty, but they said I’m screwed basically when it comes to the battery. They said it’s a $5000 repair.

I did find used batteries in the $1200 range. Is it possible to change these things at home? I know they are buried and not easily accessible, but I’m more concerned about possible software issues or anything along those lines. Just not ready for a $5000 hit to the wallet right now.
Good morning. I can take a closer look at your battery repair concerns on my end. To get things started, can you please send over a message with your VIN and the name/location of the Ford dealer you are currently working with?

That is sad to hear ... I traded my '21 PB about 18 months ago due to several transmission issues related to the PB operation. The truck would still drive and run, the battery operate like it was supposed to ... but after four repairs for the same thing - replace module, replace it again, rebuild transmission completely, replace transmission with new one - I arranged a good trade with the dealer (they were extremely helpful in my view) and bought a new '23 EB Lariat (non-PB). I had 83,000 at the time and sensed many more issues to come ... sorry to hear about yours. Good luck and as previously posted, work the dealer and Ford for a solution.

Side note - the service guy told me after the final transmission replacement "well that won't happen again", to my reply "I know because I won't own this truck when it does" ...

Yep
The battery warranty is 8 years/100k miles.

112,000 miles, just missed it
I'm at 112K now, was it giving you any indication of dying? Less electric driving, etc?

Get a 2nd opinion. Why would hybrid battery and hybrid motor both go out at same time.
Most dealers are part replacement places. Just replace until problem is solved.

So, got an update today. Ford had reached out on this post and set up a case number for me 5 days ago. Just got a call from the advisor assigned to my truck. Looks like I am indeed shit out of luck. Ford is apparently unwilling to make any of this right. So now I’m back to square one.

Looking into replacing the battery myself now. Part number the dealer gave me was ML3Z-10B690-D, I have found another part number ML3Z-10B690-A. It looks like the -D is just a newer model but I am not sure. Anybody have any insight on this or any reference I can look at?

thanks

i would ask your dealer to reach out to Ford for financial assistance. They offered to cover 70% of my recent out of warranty repair. (long story that i have been outlining in another thread but ended up getting it all covered. I’ll link it below because your issues don’t sound too different from what I have been dealing with since May). The dealership should know how to start the request process.

https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/wont-start-stop-safely-now-u0412-p0563-p0adf.24531/

In short, I have had my hybrid battery, BECM, both 12v batteries, a fuse box all replaced and still had issues. The repair happening now is replacing a wiring harness that required them to remove a good portion of my front end.
My 2021 PB king ranch (74k/mi) is in the shop now due to the “Stop Safely Now” alert. It disabled the truck in my driveway. Had to be flatbed towed to dealership. They replaced alternator and battery under hood. No fix. They then got into the hybrid battery and saw corrosion and moisture. They are now wanting me to cover it because warranty does not cover water damage. They said the only way this is possible is that the truck was submerged! Which it absolutely has not been. I don’t even own a boat. So the boat launch excuse they tried to say, is out. My ticket is 6400$ Anyone heard of this happening before? I’d really rather not get my lawyer involved. But what else can I do, then just pay it..? See ‘as found’ photos I was sent by dealer attached.

If you haven’t already I would do what I mentioned above- ask the dealer to reach out to Ford about financial assistance and call Ford directly and open a case. I would keep pushing for Ford to cover it. If you haven’t had it submerged like they suggest, and I’m sure you haven’t, there is obviously something wrong with a seal somewhere to let water get in there.

I asked the same thing when I went up there to see the “submersion” damage they were claiming. It is a hole with a thin see through paper type material over it. They call it a breather.

Breather lines are common, for example your differentials will have one. However, they almost always have a "riser tube" leading well above the differential. They also usually have a one-way valve at the top. A breather that is "paper" taped over a hole is not a breather, it is a manufacturing defect.

Agree with above
A hole with a thin film over it..is not a breather.
Any pb owners here ...is there a tube hooked there?
Logic says yes
No way ...well
I wouldn't think there is no breather tube attached to that hole...it's obvious..at least in pic....it's hmmm nor keeping water out.
I don't have a pb....but

My 2021 Limited PB with 28,000 miles is in the shop now, while on the interstate running at about 75 MPH the engine shutoffs off with no warning, cluster displayed "HV battery warning" and "Powertrain Malfunction" , this happened 4 times, waiting on a diagnoses from the the dealership in Orlando, Florida that has gone above and beyond to help me.

I also have Ford Premium Care ESP, I'll bring the moisture in the HV Battery to the attention of the service dept.

Could this possibly be caused by an automatic car wash underbelly spray?

Pretty much every lithium batteries on vehicles have these. It's a gortex patch to let water vapor out and keep liquid water out.

The dealer is full of shit. That level of corrosion takes months to occur.
You can get a replacement batt on ebay for $500 but the BMS unit (has all of the connectors attached) needs to be brought over. Looks like it's isolated to that one connector. Biggest concern is that level of water isn't coming through the gortex. How's the rest of the frame look? You can't be in water that long w/out having witness marks on the rotors for water submersion.

Call ford and get them involved, no way that happened in that low of mileage on a new truck.

Sorry to hear that. I will advise that I have fought with this dealership for over a month about this. After causing a scene in front of the entire service department, I got the attention of all the upper management. They jerked me around with a loaner vehicle, then called me to bring it back 3 days later and offered to shuttle me to U-SAVE car rental so i could arrange a rental for myself. Upper management got Ford Engineers involved to get a final determination on if warranty would cover it. That was last week. I got a call Monday that they deemed it to NOT be covered. Then out of nowhere my insurance calls yesterday 1/15/25 and say that they WILL cover it (even though they originally said no because it was not involved in any type of accident). SO, all hail Progressive Insurance!
