Warning to new 5.0l buyers.

I traded my 2014 F150 with 5.0 litre engine (never EVER added oil in 6 years) for a 2021 F150 5.0 litre. At 1,300km the oil light came on for a 1 litre top up.
The truck puffs blue smoke on a cold start-up.

I don’t like where this is headed.

Always a risk with the 5.0 it seems. I have been meaning to check mine.

They’ve even gone with a thicker oil for ‘21, the only vehicle that I ever owned which burned oil was one of my 911s, which coincidentally, had a similar deposited cylinder liner to save weight/cost. I had another one that was the same year, same engine, that didn’t burn a drop.

Puffs of blue smoke on start-up is usually something to do with the valve guides leaking down. I’ve seen several low mile Mercedes V8s that would give off visible puffs if they sat for any length of time.

I'm currently at 863 miles with mix of city and highway. I check the oil at least once a week for the first 1000 miles (check every fuel stop after the first 1000 miles). So far oil is still clean/clear, and hasn't used/leaked a drop. No blue smoke on cold or warm starts.

No regrets.

No oil usage in the first 500 miles for me. My Mustang 5.0 does not use a drop between oil changes either, approximately 5,000 miles between changes.

Same for me, oil level is perfect at 2000km,
being involved in mechanics I found that some people created the oil consumption by over filling the oil, I always waited a minimum of 5 minutes after shutting the engine to let the hot oil to drain back in the pan, or it is better to check oil level cold before starting the engine and important make sure that the parking is level, I use to handle a fleet of F150. On remote construction site and we went over pvc valve replacement but 99% of the problem was the way the driver checked is dipstick but you can have the bad 1% engine oil quality is very important too, good luck with your truck.

I get a warning light every time I start mine stating oil is low. It started the morning after I took delivery of the vehicle. Dealer emptied the oil and refilled it but it still happens. Went back to the dealer today to have it fixed...hope to have it in a few days.

Just checked yesterday... 2000 miles and still at the full mark. I will check it every 1000 miles until I am sure there are no consumption issues. Looking very good so far!
