Only thing I’ve heard about cam phasers is the issue my friend is having with his older modular 5.4
He’s pretty much leaving it alone as it is not constant.
Just gets a bit of spark rattle occasionally but not frequently.
I've seen here and in other forums that seem to imply that ALL 3.5 Ecoboosts have this issue, which I seriously doubt since everyone I know with that engine in their Explorers, Expeditions, and F150s also have had no issues.
As with any flaw, those that have it will complain the loudest, those without it are quietly happy.
I'm sure Ford is well aware that some have had issues with the 3.5 Ecoboost, just like they're aware of issues with the 5.0, just like they're aware of issues with the halogen headlights, just they're aware of issues with <insert your favorite issue here>,...............
I'm also sure they're doing what they can to resolve those issues if they become widespread, and will also do everything they can to ensure those issues don't carry over to the next generation.
I'm not saying that some don't have these issues, I'm only suggesting that I doubt it's as widespread as some seem to think. If it was that bad, we all wouldn't be here, we'd be in the GM/Ram/Toyota forums instead. ALL brands have various issues, NONE are perfect.
I'm curious, is the issue FAILURE on a small portion of the population, or is the issue DISSATISFACTION with all of the ecoboosts and the algorithm/programming/performance when working as designed?
I cannot quite tell what the problem statement is. I also have not had FAILURE on my 2017 3.5 EB but I have no clue whether the correct operation is to the original poster's satisfaction or not... (it is my first truck so I have no comparison point either)
Hope I'm making sense? There is a big difference in those 2 problem statements...
There are a few issues associated with this going around.
Cold start rattle is more common.
I have a cold engine off throttle rattle that goes away once its warmed up.....im told its normal, tho I know multiple guys with EBs and Im the only one that has it.
Have 70k kms on it and its been doing it since about 25k kms.
Another year of warranty left....not gonna own it past that.
Not just because of this tho...Im just ready for a different truck.
cold start rattle was apparently common on the 5.0 as well (along with oil consumption)
Some have started using 5-30 or 5-40 oil and stopped the noise and the usage.
I can comment on the problem. I think it is a nuisance issue but not necessarily detrimental to performance. My 2018 F150 has the problem. Rattling noise when acceleration normally in cold weather but not always. I've had all four replaced and it has improved but still occurs. Mine were a recall by Ford. My son's 2019 doesn't have this problem at all.
