i am approaching the 2 year anniversary of my 2023 F-150 Powerboost.

A little context here. It is my daily driver however, I only drive about 10K mile a year (drive to office, HD runs, help family move stuff etc..). It was purchased with retirement in mind (Florida; beach, generator and Colorado; snow, off road, generator). Hopefully it's my last truck until they take my driving privileges. Like most of you the truck is just fabulous and does my all suburban bidding.

Early on (about 6 months in) I got the dreaded "Stop Safely Now" issue. I believe I got it twice within a few days of each other. Have not had the issues since. I can literally hybrid it home the last mile or so to my driveway. Now, I make sure I did not squeeze the hybrid battery dry when going home. Maybe a system update fixed it or my it was my behavior.

Here were my initial thought after a few week of ownership.
https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/10-first-impressions-on-my-new-2023-pb-lariat.14526/

  1. So far I really enjoy it. Dare I say, I love it.
  2. in urban driving, moderate traffic, and speeds in the 30s to 50ish, i can get 24mpg. 10 to 20 mile trips are getting 20mpg to 22mpg (on trip computer) Short trips are in the teens, which is understandable. Too soon to realistically calc true overall MPG. (Update: MPG is all over the place. It depends on my driving, length, and speed of trip. However hand calc says I normally get 22+/- MPG per tank. On long interstate trips, if I keep it under 70MPH it gets about 24MPG, at 80 it gets 20MPG)
  3. the electric mode only kicks in when, pressing the brake for a bit, coasting or not taxing the engine, or stopped. when I attempt to accelerate from a stop with any realistic effort the engine kicks on. (update: it kicks in a lot more than I thought. i don't even notice it when driving)
  4. Sport Mode should be called "ludicrous speed" or OMG Mode. When quickly accelerating from a stop, even my 27 y/o son even said holy sheet. (Update: even in normal mode the truck is quick and fast .)
  5. about 99% of the time I cannot tell when it switches to electric and back even if I am paying attention. Most times watching the tach is the only way I notice the engine kicked back on.
  6. a few times there are noticeable tranny shifts similar to what I have experienced in most newer vehicles with new electronic trannies. Usually when decelerating then abruptly accelerating before the tranny gets into the right gear. (update: still true)
  7. when it is cold outside (sub 32 to single digits like the week before Christmas 2022) the hybrid part and MPG suffers. Only 3 days of data here so other things may have been a factor. (Update: temp does affect the hybrid)
  8. with heavy morning dew, the water channels into the deep groove on the hood (BAP and SAP pkgs) directly in front of the driver's view and splashes on the windshield when stopping. It is literally is like someone is squirting a water hose on the windshield. (update: still an issue)
  9. getting between 1//4 to 1/3 of my miles in electric mode.
  10. everyone loves the Avalanche color with the BAP
I would add that, I notice when I have my foot on the brake and stopped, I hear the whine. At drive thrus it is noticeable otherwise I rarely hear it.

Overall, I love the truck and really have no concern of it longevity.

Thanks so much for your post. I've had my 2024 about 6 months and we haven't had the typical winter rains in my area yet. Thanks for the heads up about the hood splash back !

Now getting about the same mpg results as you. Seeing the same 3-5 mpg drop on short 5 -10 minute trips. Low/Mid 20's average per each tankfull.

I think it was snakebitten that offered some good advice on getting into battery mode. he advised to gradually accelerate to 2-4 mph above your target, then ease up and the tach drops to zero. On flat roads, light application on the pedal allows the battery to maintain the speed for a decent distance. Averaging about 33 - 38% battery mode. Sometimes get 32-34 mpg on 15 minute freeway trips when the pre- and post-rush hour traffic is moving smoothly at 30-40 mph.

yeah @Snakebitten seem to understand these trucks. At first I tried to max the MPG but I realized if I just drive it as I normally do I get about the same MPG anyway.

I just hit one year on a similar truck - 502a PowerBoost but sport appearance instead of black appearance. I was looking for a leftover 2023 that was as close as possible to my ideal build at the time and ended up with this one.

My mileage experience is similar - I have a lifetime calculated average of 22.5 MPG. In the summer, I average 24-25 consistently. Winter is 20-21. I notice it goes into electric mode much less often when it's cold out. I also end up with 1/4-1/3 electric miles. Again, more in the winter less in the summer.

When I first got the truck, the powertrain was pretty rough. Transitions weren't smooth and it was herky-jerky. In about 500 miles, it had smoothed out quite a bit and it's good now.

I had the one recall for the ECU reflash and one TSB for some speakers sometimes not working on startup. A nearby dealer took care of both quickly for me. Only other "issue" is some relatively minor rattles. One is the driver's door weatherstripping and I've been too lazy to adjust the alignment of the door. The other is a mystery.

The highlight is the powertrain. In addition to being a bit more efficient than other trucks, it's also got more power and I used it to run my pellet stove and refrigerator during a couple storms last winter. Much quieter and more efficient than a regular generator! The seat comfort is also excellent and the ergonomics are good. That combined with the excellent infotainment make it a great vehicle for long drives.

Other than the rattles, low points are mostly just the way this truck was optioned - I wish the dealer had added the work surface and B&O Unleashed instead of the power running boards. That would have made it perfect, but since I was looking for a leftover truck to use a PCO on, beggars can't be choosers. The running boards are fine, I just wouldn't have sprung for them. The work surface wasn't a deal breaker, but I definitely would have checked the box since it's a cheap option. The regular 8-speaker B&O is good enough, but just barely. I do like that I found a sport appearance one instead of black appearance - I don't like black wheels and sport appearance came with gunmetal gray.

Totally concur with all your points except for your last comment, which I barely hear at all, if ever...18 months on my '23 PB Lariat and over 30,000 miles and have loved every mile of it. Daily driver, short and long trips, it couldn't be better. Cheers

Started driving F150's in the 80's. So far, I love my 23. Found it on a dealer lot in May 2023 and it checked 95% of the boxes I would have ordered. I would have skipped the moon roof (payload) and would have got tow mirrors. Other than those 2 things, it's perfect.

The dealer replaced the battery a few months after I bought it and I'm happy to report there have been no power issues since.

Like you, this is my retirement vehicle. Bought a camper shortly after getting the truck and have been using the 7.2 generator whenever we don't stay at a campground. It's perfect for powering the camper. Took a 6,000 mile trip through the Rockies and Utah this year. The truck performed flawlessly.

My only concern right now is the max tow axle recall. Hope they resolve it in January, as promised.

Im 18 months into my PB ownership and love it. Any issues I have had, have not been PB related, but overall F150\B&O static\Park Assist resetting issues.
I wasnt shopping for a PB specifically... honestly didnt even know what it was. Just wanted a 6.5ft Blue, Platinum.
Very happy its a PB. Have used the Gennie twice and much better than my previous Gennie.

I am joining the powerboost club tomorrow. I have been waiting since cOVID for prices to come closer to normal. Picked up a 2024 Lariat 502A on their end of year deals. It was an abandoned customer order from June so one of the last 2024s made.

These positive threads make me comfortable that I mad a good choice. Moving from my second Acura MDX so I’m used to really high reliability. I owned 3 generations of Explorer with pretty decent reliability too. Had a Windstar. Man that POS tested my resolve. Made me hate my dealers service department.

anyway back to the PB. What a rocket. I swear this thing will outrun my buddy’s Mustang GT 5.0.
