  1. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

So I went back and forth on getting the alignment checked but I finally ended up doing it today along with an oil change. My alignment is within spec and they made no changes to my truck after I installed all the shocks on my own. I figured this was the case because you can remove the links from...
  2. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

I have 18” wheels and I’m glad. My previous f150 had 20” and I could feel the weight of those wheels and it was obviously impacting ride quality. The MPG on my ‘21 is also about 1-2mpg better even though the drivetrain is identical to my previous truck, down to the rear diff ratio (2.7T, 10...
  3. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

I just wanted to post an update on this thread because I feel the Bilsteins have really hit a stride. I have about 6k miles on the fronts and 9k miles on the rears and I think how the truck is now is about as comfortable as it gets without spending a lot more money. If I had the option of...
  4. MPG data points

That’s likely a calibration error, we all know the computers don’t display accurate numbers. My last 3 Fords have all been 1-1.5 mpg optimistic. Doesnt really make sense that using extra fuel to speed up quickly would save fuel.
  5. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

The fronts came with new bolts cause the Bilstein is different than the stock shock. I reused the bolts for the rear.
  6. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

I meant to reply to this long ago but kept forgetting. Sorry about that. I wanted to take measurements before and after the install but I forgot initially. I did take measurements on the stock side after I had installed the bilstein on the other side. Now after I am sure they are broken in, the...
  7. MPG data points

Optimal mpg is likely just after you enter your highest gear which is probably 35-45 for many vehicles. Larger engines tend to be on the higher end of that range and smaller engines at the lower. With the 10 speed in the F150, my truck goes into 9th at 46 and that might be more efficient than...
  8. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

I wanted to wait a bit and get some miles on everything. Right now I have over 4,000 miles on the rear and 1,200 miles on the front including a ~500 mile trip last week. overall I am happy. With the improvements. Personally I would be fine ifthe shocks were even a bit more firm but they are a...
  9. F150 3.73 locking differential

It may have been a Chevy manual I am remembering but the systems probably work similarly. I believe the 4A keeps the hubs locked and just engages the Tcase when it detects slip. I remember the manual saying it’s best to not leave the truck in 4A all the time, only in slippery conditions and...
  10. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

I asked the dealer to quote me and they said $500, “truck shop” wanted $450, another local shop was $330 but that was fronts only. Probably another hour of labor for the rears too, add at least $100 for that additional hour. They will probably suggest an alignment too, which most shops charge at...
  11. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

They are all definitely heavier damped in the sense that the aftermarket shocks produce any damping forces at all compared to the stock shocks just giving up haha. If truck A and truck B have similar spring rates and the end goal is a similar ride, the damping curves will be nearly identical...
  12. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

I did see you mention eibach extended their applications of their shocks. It’s comforting to know they are comfortable putting their 13th Gen shocks on the 14th. I went out in the garage and flipped my rear shocks. Might feel just a tiny bit lighter over small bumps and cracks but not much...
  13. F150 3.73 locking differential

Insurance is required by law and your financier. 4x4 is not lol. I would have 4x4 if I lived elsewhere. Used to live in Indiana and it’s hard to find a new truck that is not 4x4 there aside from work trucks. Where I live and with what I do, I don’t need it and it saves me considerable cash to...
  14. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

True. It will also attach the heavier part of the shock to the truck and the lighter part of the shock to the moving axle, making a slight improvement in unsprung weight and ride quality. all tiny improvements but still improvement.
  15. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

Well now I feel I need to go flip mine too… I installed mine like the factory twin tube shocks and now I see the letters are upside down! Just slightly annoying but I believe a monotube shock will work just fine in either orientation
  16. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

The FX4 has different shocks so I think it will be different than my truck. If you still find it’s not good, can’t recommend bilsteins enough. right now, the new shocks are so much of an upgrade that I’m very happy with the handling of the truck and I’m holding off on a rear sway bar...
  17. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

I really wish I had taken more pictures for you guys. That’s my bad but the angles of the mounting points and such were all the same on both shocks. The top mounting point can move so it wont have much affect. The spring perch is in the same location once the collar provided by bilstein is...
  18. Installed Bilstein 4600 on rear suspension of 2021 F-150 XLT

I’m rereading it now to see changes. I don’t really follow you on the spacer lift you mentioned. the motion ratio may have changed as much as 20%, sure, cause they went from An attachment point that only translated 80% of the sway bar force to the wheel. If they had moved the attachment point...
  19. F150 3.73 locking differential

I like the e locker on the fords cause they are very common compared to other trucks. Instead of getting 4wd where I live in coastal North Carolina at a cost of $4000, I get 2wd trucks with a rear locker at a cost of $400 and pocket the savings and the reduced fuel cost. And I still haven’t...
  20. F150 3.73 locking differential

It is an open diff when not locked, same as the GM diff. The truck does have traction control via the brakes to limit wheel spin in normal driving. The difference is with the ford locker, the driver can lock the diff in slippery situations BEFORE slipping occurs and prevent loss of traction. The...
