  1. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

I wish I knew more about the differences between our trucks, or even had wiring diagrams, but I've never heard of an automotive battery that had a device inline with the battery to regulate current. Maybe those fancy 285 volt batteries, but lead-acid is usually just heavily-cabled straight to...
  2. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

.... Arrived at work this morning and checked Forscan Lite, and the soc was the same 94% as the forced upward calibration I checked at 4:30 this morning. 0 amps going into battery with engine running. Target soc is set to 80%. I'm surprised the truck didn't pull down the voltage on drive to...
  3. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

..... I realized this week that I just can't hold the voltage (via power supply) when getting home, at the same voltage it calibrated at an hour and half before leaving work earlier that day. It probably compares the voltage that was used on last cal, and if same at time of next cal, it won't...
  4. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

Within seconds of those brief sample voltages & currents in the above pics, the resting voltage was held all night (via power supply) at 12.79v and calibrated upward overnight to 94%. I parked the truck that afternoon after work commute with 78% soc. I guess that's why the lowest voltage in the...
  5. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

Those readings explain why no matter what the charging voltage, I'm mostly charging under 2 amps, and always displaying 1.
  6. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

Not sure. Never gave it time to settle much after getting home from work, but just started pumping in 10 amps CC for several minutes first. I estimate the soc to be somewhere in the low 90s at the time. Not very controlled
  7. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

I've gotta think with short commutes, the charge current you get should be much higher than the 1 or 2 amps I see for most of my daily commute.' You got me thinking today when you said you plan to charge externally to see what the battery draws. So below is 8 or 9 voltages I'm...
  8. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

At the moment you receive an unexplainable voltage, do you have a 2nd meter to compare meters with simultaneously?
  9. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

Scott, since you changed your Target Soc value essentially out of reach, have you seen nothing but close to 15 volts, as I would suspect? And to your unpredictable charging, do you think you would benefit by a BMS reset? I think I've done 2 or 3 so far, as you can see by my "accumulated"...
  10. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

In my Forscan pic a few posts above, the SOC is fictitious, as it has been tricked with unmetered charging, but the realtime voltage and battery current are accurate. The battery soc is way closer to full than shown.
  11. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

That's a great idea. All you have is two variables, applied voltage and battery absorption. If you throw together a scenario with only those 2 variables, and you know what one of them is (voltage) it will give you an idea as to what the battery state of absorption is. Like in my Forscan pic...
  12. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

Don't forget the BMS shunt is good for reading amperages non-intrusively down as low as a couple amps using the voltage drop across it. Is quick and convenient, but not the best resolution below 1 amp (0.1 mV across it). You've given us plenty of data to ponder.
  13. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

Somehow this morning's SOC cal check showed the same 78% as I shut down with last night. I should have seen a value in the low 80s. I've seen this before a few times when holding voltage steady and higher with a CV source. I wasn't holding too high... 12.75v. All this managed to do was prevent...
  14. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

.......... When I'm forcing a "downward" calibration, I park just 2 feet on other side of the house wall, and briefly (5-25 minutes) plug in a 13 amp test load to throw it out of cal. Easy bluetooth connection.
  15. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

I can't seem to get any soc calibration readings over 77% to complete the lookup table. So now that I don't have to run to the barn to take many voltage readings, make power supply adjustments, etc. which was a real hassle, it's much easier now to plug the power supply into the back of the truck...
  16. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

Your 14 hour overnight logging back in early Feb. realized an average of about 116mAh, (for the last 9900 data points), however a couple hours before the end, the average was almost down to 100 mA. For some reason the 14-hour average rose to 116 mA by the end. That's almost 2.8 Ah per day...
  17. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

This screen below is realtime when connected, and shows nice magnification of events, but is too short of a trend. It doesn't just get pushed off screen to the left, it totally blanks out and starts a new 5-minute trend. This is the only screen that you need to be in range and connected for. ...
  18. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

It draws more than double when connected (2.5 mA) so I close the app and it goes back to the 1 mA standby. At home I'm parked WELL within range all the time, but app has to be opened to draw more current. Luckily it logs 720 readings a day (every 2 minutes) and transfers all that once you...
  19. Ford BMS Battery Monitoring System: How it Works, How to Properly Charge, How to Power Accessories

I can certainly understand that. I wouldn't bother either if it weren't on a BT phone app.
