2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Is Going after the F-150 PowerBoost

The new hybridized Tundra really has only one competitor: the Ford F-150 PowerBoost. Here's how it compares.

FORD, TOYOTA

  • Toyota's new 2022 Tundra full-size pickup offers a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 hybrid called iForce Max to compete with Ford's new F-150 PowerBoost hybrid.
  • The Tundra's hybrid powertrain produces 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, while the F-150 PowerBoost has 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet from its twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid.
  • Toyota hasn't announced fuel economy estimates, but the F-150 PowerBoost is EPA-rated at 25 mpg combined.
Hybridized full-size pickups seem like a no-brainer, given that hybrids tend to improve both torque and fuel economy, two areas in which manufacturers are always striving for better numbers. But Ram's hybrid system is a weak-sauce 48-volt motor-generator that can't propel the truck, and Chevy gave up on the Silverado hybrid long ago, concentrating its resources on the upcoming Silverado electric. Thus, the 2022 Toyota Tundra hybrid only has one real competitor: the Ford F-150 PowerBoost. Let's see how they compare.

TOYOTA

Both the Tundra and the F-150 use a very similar architecture—a twin-turbo V-6 with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The nonhybrid Tundra's 3.4-liter V-6 makes 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Adding the electric motor brings total output to 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet, numbers that were clearly benchmarked to be a little bit better than the PowerBoost's 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque. Above 18 mph, the Tundra's gas engine is always running, which is also the case at all speeds in Tow/Haul mode. The F-150 can go into EV mode at speeds as high as 50 mph.

2022 Toyota Tundra vs. Other Full-Size Pickups

While Ford stashes a 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery under the bed, Toyota uses an approximately 1.5-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery mounted under the rear seat, presumably impacting interior storage space to some degree. The PowerBoost can also spin its engine to spin the electric motor as a generator, allowing owners to, say, run their houses during a blackout. The Tundra hybrid doesn't have a generator function.

Toyota has yet to release price or fuel-economy numbers for the hybrid powertrain, which is dubbed iForce Max. But Toyota sees the hybrid as its flagship, as indicated by the fact that it's the only powertrain offered on the TRD Pro. The iForce Max is an option on Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trims, meaning it'll go with the pricey trucks. Ford, on the other hand, will let you order the hybrid powertrain on even a base XL work truck (about $44,000).

We'll have to get these two together for a real-world test once the 2022 Tundra hits the street. But on paper it looks like the F-150—with its generator, underbed lithium battery, and high-speed EV-mode capability—holds the advantage.

Toyota missed a golden opportunity to leap ahead of Chevy and Ram by excluding the onboard generator. I'm just disappointed though in this reveal. No bed step, no generator, buttons look like they came out of a 06' Camry, exterior looks meh to me. Cool info screen, camo seats, full rear power window is awesome. I was rooting for the Tundra, and I'm sure it'll be an excellent truck, I was just wanting a bit more to push competition.

Tundra forums are not super happy with this reveal. Some of them are even saying they may as well get the Powerboost.

I agree. Me being a first year adopter of the PB, it makes me very happy to know how ahead of the game it is and also a year early.

Less storage space, and electric only only up to 18mph?
No pro power-like competitor?

If Ford can get their QA issues under control, they are going to do just fine.

Interesting truck however. Notice that Apple Carplay and Android Auto are full screen. I bet the suspension probably gives a smoother ride then the Fords leaf springs.
Also wondering what kind of first year QA issues this truck will have.

I have always liked the sporty looks of the Tundras, but thought their interiors were severely lacking.

This new Tundra looks like they spent all of their time on the interior, but the exterior is awful. Was the grill inspired by a whale, or a trip to the dentist office?

No generator? WTF was Toyota thinking? Half of Ford's ad copy revolved around that and while it's likely that the Tundra hybrid has been in development for a long time. The application is pretty obvious and a huge disappointment that they overlooked such a desirable feature.

Pretty much all the newer Asian designs are hideous and way too reliant on 80's giant mecha Anime. The lack of a real front bumper is stupid too and results in expensive damage in even non-eventful parking lot collisions. The salvage auctions are filled with Tacoma trucks that have been rear-ended at low speed and totaled. It shows, since when I researched insurance costs, the Toyota Tacoma is almost twice as expensive to insure as F-150.

Not a Ford Homer but the Nissan moved up half a spot and is now tied for ugliest truck on the planet. (IMHO)

I can't beloved they are still using Nickel Metal Hydride batteries! Same as a 1997 Prius. And it looks like they took a lesson from BMW on the hideous grill. Really missed the mark on this one.

Never liked the large grilles on their cars like them even less on the trucks and that mostly red interior TRD looks like it belongs in a whore house. It's about as ugly as those big mouth grilles.

I might be the only person here who doesn’t hate the way it looks (in TRD PRO form mostly. Minus the red interior, assume that’s not a requirement). But I actually had high hopes for the hybrid system from Toyota being a step up from the Powerboost seeing as Toyota is pretty much the hybrid leader. Disappointing to see it’s the same if not a little worse, along with no generator. I will be very interested to see how the execution is in actual driving compared to Powerboost

Gotta agree with you. I don’t mind the looks. I was more interested in the hybrid power train as well. But pretty much matching Ford specs and no generator is an L for Toyota. Further disappointing is they seem to be locking the hybrid to the high trims only. Ford does a great job allowing the PB on the xl trim and the pro lighting. Allowing their latest and greatest engines available to all buyers.

My thoughts exactly. I feel like Ford stole the lead from Toyota on this one.
