That‘s a great question! I was getting ready to post that same thing. General claims the LT version of this tire weighs 61 lbs, not too much different from the actual SL weight. That's a 57 lb tire but General's website says it's a 46 lb tire. Where's the other 11 lbs?
What do those disparities work out to in kilograms?...Here is where it gets pretty interesting. I weighed all 4 of the wheels/tires on both scales...
After confirming the one in the photo above was in fact 84.2 lbs, I moved on to the other 3. They were 82 lbs, 81 lbs, and 77 lbs confirmed on both scales...
I think weighing your tires and wheels is an interesting idea and your results were surprising. There were a few other people on other forums who also weighed their tires and rims, and saw larger than expected variations. One person found a +8% variation, and contacted the tire manufacturer:Totally agree. Gonna run ‘em anyway.
You measure a 24% difference between the spec and your heaviest tire. Maybe all-terrain tires have a larger tolerance, but +24% seems excessive. I would assume the heaviest tire is likely way out of spec or that spec wrong.Just got a reply from Hankook:
I just got a set of Ventus R-S3's 245/40/17. One tire weight is 25lb and another tire is 26.5lb I am very concerned with that much of a variation in weight. I would like to know what the max tire weight variation is.
Thanks for the question. I contacting our R&D center to get the following information for that tire:
Cured tire spec weight is approximately 24.5 lbs.
Weight tolerance is +/- 3% = 23.8 lbs to 25.2 lbs.
