First 2021 Ford F-150, Mustang Mach-E OTA Updates Start March 18

Ford actually began beta testing Mach-E OTA updates earlier this month, but now it’s ready to roll them out to all owners. However, Ford is still taking a staged approach to the updates, and not all owners will receive them at the same time. Most customers can expect to receive updates within 3-4 weeks after the initial launch date.

Both 2021 Ford F-150 and Ford Mustang Mach-E owners will receive two different software packages, spaced out one week from each other. Delivery of both packages is expected to be completed by the end of April.

This software update includes bug fixes and minor refinements, as well as an update to correct the F-150 Zone Lighting battery concern. Customers can expect to see in-vehicle icon notifications which include update details for these two software packages. Customers using FordPass will also receive alerts on their home screen upon successful completion. Additionally, the Ford Owner website will have updated status information when customers log in.

This update will not require the vehicle to be parked with the ignition off. As long as automatic updates are set to on, which is the standard factory setting, the process will take place in the background, without any action needed. Notification icons on the vehicle’s screen will inform owners of the status of the update and what is included. We previously covered how this process works in the 2021 F-150, with a helpful video that walks owners through the update installation process.

Do we have a ability to disable the automatic updates and only perform a manual OTA update of the software. As updates are always expected to work correctly this is always not the case. I'm usually comfortable to wait a couple weeks before an update is applied to allow the potential bugs to be worked out.

I wonder if one of these updates will fix the Alarm issue.
It won’t. Apparently the alarm issue is with the Body Control Module (BCM) detecting a very slight vibration or something else in the trucks system that triggers the false alarm. The BCM cannot be updated via OTA and needs to be brought in to a dealer to have it flashed with the most recent software.

I had it flashed about a week ago and no false alarms since. Hopefully this continues and the BCM update resolved the issue.

I don’t think that’s accurate. I‘m pretty sure the OTA system can update every module in the vehicle.

I believe ford recommended going to the dealer to get the BCM module flashed because the OTA update wasn’t finalized.
This is purely my opinion based on all the info i’ve gathered

In all the original ford OTA marketing they said almost every single module is connected but this does not necessarily mean they are ready to update all modules OTA yet. This does mean all the necessary connections are present so I assume they will start easy with the main sync module that will eventually get an OTA update that will enable updates to other modules.

I hope it fixes the issue with the Pro Power being on automatically on ignition. Turning it off all the time is a pain.

Flashing FPGAs in control modules is very different than downloading OTA software. I'm not in automotive controls but I do know there are almost 29 control modules in the new F150 and I could guess they operate fairly independently with data values transmitted over a shared bus. If you want to change the way they behave, you need to flash new logic to them. I don't know if the heads at Ford are comfortable with the reliability and safety of in situ flashing.

I got the update this morning. Went really smoothly. Rust is completely gone. Getting advertised MPG now. Sound system actually goes loud like it’s supposed to. Tremor bash plate is still downloading though.
