First Look: 2021 F-150 LED Projector Headlamps & LED Tail Lights?

Here is a quick look at the LED Projector Headlamps and LED Taillamps on the 2021 Ford F-150.

These particular headlights are the dual beam style and what Ford calls "LED Projector with Dynamic Bending Headlamps". There haven't been any photos or videos showing this style of headlight on an F-150 yet. I also had not seen them turned on and in use until I found this truck at the auto show, so I had a partner work the switch and got this video for you all!

I found it interesting that the amber colored strip in the middle of the headlight housing does not appear to be a turn signal. Rather, the signals/emergency flashers are located at the bottom of the light as you'll see in the video. It took a while for us to figure out the knob that activated the lights because it was not working as it typically would because of the battery maintainer the truck was hooked up to, but you can still get a pretty decent look at how they work!

These LED Projector headlights are included on the F-150 starting with the Lariat 502A High package and higher trim levels. This F-150 was the Limited model.

This is a similar video of the LED taillights in action. The rear LED lights are also standard on Lariat 502A High and above.

Did you have a chance for your helper to turn the steering wheel to see if the headlamps moved?

I thought of that, but the steering wheel was in the security lock position, the same way as when the truck is off so I couldn’t move it.

I work for a top automotive LED supplier and I personally fully disassembled one of the dynamic head lamps a few months ago for some analysis. All I can say is that a replacement unit is going to cost a fortune! Nice lamp, though. It should be very robust from a thermal management point of view.

I have had mine for a few days now and driven in the dark a lot. The headlights are fantastic and i don't believe the lights actually move, but it uses the led running lights in the bumper to turn on as you make a turn. it's really nifty. I wish mine had the LED tail lights though.

And this is one of the main reasons Albert with Granger heavily endorsed obtaining an ESP. One headlamp assembly is close to the cost of the ESP.

You have an XLT 302A? You don’t get the dynamic LED headlamps with that. I believe that’s Lariat and up. Although I do agree that the LED reflector lamps on the XLT are fantastic! Love mine. Major improvement to the older halogen lamps.

Fortunately LED lighting is extremely reliable with thousands of hours of life. Unless there is a poor design in the driver circuitry and/or thermal design, LEDs should not fail.
